My Pool Is Cloudy but Not Green — What's Going On?
You're seeing: Milky, hazy, or dull water — but it's not green and you don't see algae.
Cloudy-but-not-green is usually one of three underlying causes — (1) the water is over-saturated with calcium (a positive LSI, driven by pH, calcium hardness, alkalinity AND water temperature together, not pH alone), (2) weak filtration (run the pump longer, clean the filter), or (3) chloramines from chlorine that ran too low (SLAM if combined chlorine is above 0.5). But first ask what changed yesterday: a storm, a fresh fill, a shock, a killed algae bloom, a chemical you just poured in, or a phosphate remover each cloud the water in a predictable way with a predictable fix. If the numbers point at calcium, lowering pH is both the fastest fix and the test — a real calcium haze re-dissolves within hours, and if it doesn't budge it was never calcium. Skip the clarifier until you've matched yours, and know that every other cause clears over hours to days, not instantly, because the haze is particles too fine for your filter to grab in one pass.
Green means algae and has one clear fix. Cloudy but not green is different — it’s usually not algae at all, and reaching for a clarifier before you know the cause just hides the problem for a day. Cloudy water comes down to three underlying causes — but the fastest way in is often to ask what changed yesterday.
First: did it start right after something?
Cloudy water rarely appears at random. If a specific event kicked it off, that tells you the cause and the fix straight away:
- A storm or heavy rain → the rain diluted your free chlorine and washed in debris, pollen, and phosphates. Test and restore FC first; the haze usually clears as the filter catches up. (Full playbook: pool after a storm.)
- A fresh fill or big top-off → hard fill water brings in calcium, and cold, gas-laden tap water can cloud briefly. Balance the water and let it settle.
- You shocked it, or just killed an algae bloom → the water goes grey/white as the algae dies. That’s a filtering job, not a chemistry one: hold free chlorine at SLAM level and run the filter around the clock until it clears (this is the one time a clarifier genuinely helps). Cal-hypo shock also adds calcium and can cloud on its own.
- New plaster or a replaster (first few weeks) → that’s plaster dust, not a chemistry failure. Brush daily, run the filter, and keep the water balanced (slightly positive during the cure). See new-pool startup.
- A pool party / heavy swim day / pollen season → sunscreen, body oils, and fine organics overwhelm the filter faster than chlorine can oxidize them. Skim, run the pump longer, and it clears in a day or two.
- You added a chemical and it clouded within the hour → that’s usually the product, not a new problem. Anything strongly alkaline — cal-hypo shock (pH ~11.8), soda ash, even a hard slug of liquid chlorine — spikes the pH in a plume around wherever you poured it. In that plume the water briefly can’t hold its dissolved calcium, so calcium carbonate drops out as a fine white haze. It’s the same mechanism as cause #1 below, just local and sudden instead of slow. Prevention is technique, not a different product: pre-dissolve where the label says to, broadcast slowly over the deep end with the pump running, and don’t pour a high-pH product down a skimmer or into a still pool.
- You just used a phosphate remover → the cloud is the product working. Lanthanum bonds with phosphate into an insoluble solid, so it doesn’t make phosphate vanish — it converts it into a fine precipitate your filter then has to catch. A day or two of haze is normal; an overdose leaves a milky haze that’s genuinely hard to clear, and it can coat a cartridge (clean it afterwards). If none of those fit — the water just clouded up over days with no obvious trigger — it’s one of the three underlying causes below.
The three underlying causes — test to tell which
- Chemistry: the water is over-saturated with calcium. Water can only hold so much dissolved calcium, and when it’s pushed past that point the excess comes out of solution as a fine white cloud — the first step toward scale. This is a water-balance (LSI) problem: the index has gone positive. It is not only pH. Four things push the index up, and they add together — high pH, high calcium hardness, high total alkalinity, and warm water. That’s why a pool that was fine all spring can cloud in a July heatwave with nobody touching a thing, and why “my pH is 7.6, so it can’t be calcium” is the wrong conclusion: at high CH and 90°F water, 7.6 can still be over the line. - Filtration: the filter isn’t catching it. Fine particles stay suspended when the pump runs too few hours a day, or the filter is dirty, channeled, or worn. Fix: run the pump longer (even 24/7 until clear), clean or backwash the filter, and replace a cartridge past its life.
- Chloramines: chlorine has been too low. Combined chlorine (CC) clouds and smells. Fix: test CC — if it’s above 0.5 ppm, raise free chlorine to SLAM level to burn it off. (This is also the start of an algae bloom, before it turns visibly green.)
The order to test: work top-down. Check pH and calcium first (a two-minute test rules the most common cause in or out), then combined chlorine (is it a chloramine problem?), then filtration (has it been running enough, is the filter clean?). One of those three is almost always the answer.

The fastest way to confirm a calcium haze — lower the pH
If the LSI numbers point at calcium, there’s a test that doubles as the fix, and it costs you a jug of acid instead of a trip to the pool store.
A calcium haze is suspended calcium carbonate that fell out of solution. Calcium carbonate dissolves more readily in more acidic water — so bringing the pH back down doesn’t filter the cloud out, it puts the calcium back into solution. Lower the pH toward the low 7s with muriatic acid (or dry acid), keep the pump running, and watch it: a genuine calcium haze usually looks visibly better within a few hours and is typically clear inside a day. Nothing else in this guide responds that fast.
That speed is what makes it a diagnosis. If the water clears as the pH comes down, calcium was your answer and you’re done. If it doesn’t budge, it was never calcium — stop dosing acid and go test combined chlorine and your filter instead. Either way you’ve ruled a cause in or out in an afternoon.
Two honest limits. This only works on a calcium haze. Acid will do nothing for dead algae, chloramines, plaster dust, or a filter that isn’t running enough — and chasing those with acid just drives your pH into the ground and starts corroding surfaces and equipment. And handle it properly: add acid to water, never water to acid; dilute it, broadcast it slowly over the deep end with the pump running, never down a skimmer; and re-test before adding a second dose.
Why the filter can’t just grab it
Here’s the part that makes cloudy water so frustrating: the haze is made of particles finer than your filter can catch in one pass. Filters only strain down to a size, and cloudy-water particles (and dead algae) are often smaller than that:
- Sand filter: catches down to ~20–40 microns — the coarsest, so it clears a haze slowest.
- Cartridge filter: ~10–20 microns.
- DE filter: ~2–5 microns — the finest, and the fastest at polishing out a haze.
A cloud made of 1–2 micron particles slips through a sand bed again and again, which is why “just run the filter” can take days. That’s also why the two legitimate assists work the way they do: a clarifier clumps the fine particles into bigger ones the filter can grab, and DE added to a sand filter (a scoop through the skimmer) temporarily makes it filter finer. Clarifier or flocculant? They are not interchangeable
Both sit on the same shelf and neither fixes a cause, but they do opposite things to your water and picking the wrong one makes a mess.
- Clarifier — clumps particles so the FILTER can catch them. Small dose, pump runs normally, water clears over roughly 24–48 hours. Low-risk and low-effort. This is the one you want after a SLAM or a storm, once the chemistry is already right.
- Flocculant — drops everything to the FLOOR so you vacuum it out. Much more aggressive: dose, run the pump briefly to distribute, then shut the pump off and let it settle for several hours or overnight, then vacuum the sediment to waste. Fast and thorough, but it is a job, and you’ll lose several inches of water.
The catch that decides it for most people: flocculant requires the ability to vacuum to waste. That means a multiport valve with a WASTE setting — sand and DE filters have one; a standard cartridge filter does not. Vacuum settled floc back through the filter and you push the whole cloud straight back into the pool and blind the filter doing it. If you’re on a cartridge filter, flocculant is not your tool.
So: clarifier for a haze you’re willing to filter out over a day or two, flocculant only for a heavy load you want gone tonight and only if you can vacuum to waste. Neither is a substitute for the cause — if you haven’t diagnosed yet, you’re just paying to delay the problem.
If a clarifier is genuinely the right call, this is the one
Only once you’ve fixed the cause. Clarifiers are a commodity — the thing that separates them is the dose rate printed on the bottle, which is the only way to compare what a treatment actually costs. Most of the shelf doesn’t make that easy; this one states it plainly.
At 1 fl oz per 5,000 gallons, a 32 oz bottle is eight treatments of a 20,000-gallon pool — about $1.35 a treatment. We picked it on evidence depth rather than price: 4.6 stars across 12,420 owners with no Amazon Vine cards in the visible set, which is the deepest clean base in the category by a wide margin.
The honest catch — and it applies to our pick too. When we chose this one we leaned on Robelle’s critical reviews being dominated by bottles arriving leaked or half-empty. Having now read the Clorox tail properly, we have to report that leaking bottles and broken caps are the single most common complaint here as well — three of the ten visible critical cards, one of them describing product already hardened on the outside of the bottle when it arrived. That is not a reason to pick differently; it is a reason to expect it, check the box on the doorstep, and photograph anything that arrives wet. It is worth saying plainly that we applied a standard to a rival that our own pick does not fully clear.
There is also no measuring scale on the bottle, for a dose stated in ounces. Keep a cheap measuring cup with the chemicals.
The cheaper option. Robelle sells a two-quart pack at the identical stated 1 oz per 5,000 gal for roughly half the cost per dose — genuinely better value on paper, and the packaging risk we held against it turns out to be a category problem rather than a Robelle one. One owner there also reckons the liquid is thinner than rivals’ and therefore diluted; both labels state the same rate, and a viscosity impression isn’t a concentration measurement, so treat that as an owner’s hunch rather than a fact. If you’ll accept the shipping risk, it’s the cheaper buy.
And the thing worth repeating, because it’s the mistake this whole page exists to prevent: a clarifier makes particles catchable, it doesn’t catch them. It needs a clean filter that’s actually running. Dose it before you’ve diagnosed and you’ve bought yourself a day’s delay.
How long should it take to clear?
Set your expectations so you don’t panic-dose. Once the cause is actually fixed:
- Pure chemistry haze (you lowered high pH): often clears within a day.
- Dead algae or fine particulate (post-SLAM, post-storm): one to three days of around-the-clock filtration — sometimes up to a week on a sand filter.
- New-plaster dust: one to two weeks of daily brushing and filtering.

The tell that you’re on the right track is simple: it should look clearer every day. If it’s not trending clearer, the cause isn’t fixed — go back and test, don’t add another bottle.
What NOT to do
Don’t dump clarifier or flocculant as your first move — they treat the haze, not the cause, so it returns by the next afternoon. Don’t add “shock” blindly; if the cause is high pH or bad filtration, more chemicals just add to the mess. And don’t trust a green-pool reflex here: without algae, the SLAM is only the fix when combined chlorine is actually high. Diagnose, then dose once.
Cloudy water is the less-is-more lesson in miniature: the cure is a test (and some patience), not a bottle. You can’t run any of these tests reliably on strips — this is exactly what a real test kit is for.
