Sand & Cartridge Filter Maintenance: When to Clean, and When Not To

Short answer

ONE NUMBER MAKES THE REST WORK: your CLEAN BASELINE pressure, read the moment the filter is freshly serviced and the air is bled, and written on the tank in marker. Every published rule is relative to it, so without it a gauge reading tells you nothing. THE TRIGGER IS A RISE, NOT A READING: clean when pressure runs about 8 to 10 PSI above that baseline, which is the figure Hayward, River Pools and most makers publish. Do not clean on a calendar. AND DO NOT CLEAN EARLY, especially a sand filter: sand traps finer particles as it loads, so a slightly dirty bed filters BETTER than a spotless one, and backwashing a filter that did not need it costs water, costs chemistry and returns you to a coarser filter. Cartridges are less forgiving of loading because flow falls off, but the same principle applies — pressure decides. SAND: backwash to the trigger, rinse afterwards or you push dirty water back at the pool, deep-clean chemically about once a year for oils and minerals. The 'replace sand every 3 to 5 years' interval is softer than it sounds: silica does not wear out, it fails by channelling, calcifying or mud-balling, so replace it on symptoms, not on a birthday. CARTRIDGE: pull and hose between pleats, never with a pressure washer, which drives grit in and splits the fabric. Soak in a dedicated cleaner for oils. Owning a second set to swap in is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in this whole page. Elements typically last 2 to 3 years and fail at the end caps and bands as often as at the fabric. WHAT A FILTER CLEANER ACTUALLY IS, AND THE ORDER THAT MATTERS: two different jobs get sold as one product. Body oil needs a PERCARBONATE DEGREASER soak; mineral scale needs an ACID soak; and the degreaser goes FIRST, because acid on grease gums the pleats up worse and can leave you with a dirtier filter than you started with. Reading the safety data sheets across the category, the powders are 30-50% sodium percarbonate plus sodium carbonate and 1-5% enzymes, and OxiClean is roughly 50% percarbonate — so oxygen bleach gets you most of the way and a dedicated cleaner buys the enzyme blend and the right pH, not a secret active. Vinegar is too weak an acid to shift minerals, and bleach is not recommended at all because at cleaning strength it damages the media. Method beats product on a soak: four hours to overnight with agitation, not the one hour the disappointed reviews describe. AND ON THE GAUGE THE SPEC THAT MATTERS IS THE RANGE, which most buyers get wrong — a pool filter runs about 10-25 PSI, so a 0-60 dial puts the 8-10 PSI cleaning trigger across a third of the face while the 0-100, 0-160 and 0-300 gauges sold beside it bury it in the first fifth of the sweep.

Almost every filter-maintenance guide starts with “clean it when the pressure rises.” That is correct and it is unusable on its own, because rises from what?

A healthy pool can sit at 10 PSI clean, and another healthy pool can sit at 18. A gauge reading in isolation tells you nothing at all. Everything below hangs off one number, and it is the number nobody writes down.

Step one, and skip it and nothing else works: your clean baseline

Service the filter properly, then read the gauge, then write that number on the tank in marker with the date.

  • Backwash and rinse a sand filter, or pull and wash the cartridges.
  • Reassemble, run the pump, and bleed the air out of the top of the tank.
  • Let it settle at your normal running speed, then read it.

Two things people get wrong here. Air in the tank inflates the reading, so a baseline taken before bleeding is too high and you will under-clean all season. And on a variable-speed pump, pressure changes with RPM — a baseline read at 3,000 RPM is meaningless when you run at 1,800, so note the speed beside the number.

A sanity check while you are there: most clean residential sand filters sit around 10–15 PSI. If yours reads far outside that when freshly cleaned, the number to question is the gauge or the plumbing, not the filter.

Re-set the baseline every time you deep-clean or change media. It drifts over the life of the sand, and that drift is itself the diagnostic further down this page.

The trigger: a rise of 8–10 PSI, not a reading and not a calendar

Clean when the gauge runs about 8 to 10 PSI above your clean baseline. That is the figure River Pools publishes, it is what most manufacturers state, and it is the rule our pump and filter troubleshooting guide uses.

You will also see “25% over clean” quoted, including in older guidance of our own. On a 10 PSI baseline that is 12.5 PSI — a far more aggressive trigger than 18–20. We have standardised on the 8–10 PSI rise, because it is what the equipment makers publish and because the error it risks is the cheaper one, for the reason in the next section. Where your filter’s own manual gives a number, that number wins over both.

Cleaning early makes a sand filter worse. This is not a shortcut, it is physics

A clean sand bed is a coarse filter. As it loads, the trapped debris narrows the paths between grains, and the bed starts catching finer particles than it could when spotless. A slightly dirty sand filter genuinely filters better than a freshly backwashed one.

So backwashing before you need to costs you three ways: the water down the drain, the balanced and stabilized chemistry that goes with it, and a return to coarser filtration for the next few days.

Cartridges are less forgiving of heavy loading because flow falls off more sharply, but the principle holds: pressure decides, not the weekend.

Sand: the routine

Backwash to the trigger. Pump off, valve to BACKWASH, pump on, run until the sight glass runs clear — usually two to three minutes. Then RINSE for about 30 seconds before returning to FILTER. Skipping the rinse sends the disturbed bed’s dirty water straight back at the pool, which is why some owners see a cloudy return right after backwashing and conclude the filter has failed.

What a backwash actually costs you, in gallons. Published backwash flow rates run 15–20 GPM per square foot of filter area, so a typical residential sand filter wants somewhere around 46–62 GPM to lift the bed properly. Run that for the two to three minutes it takes the sight glass to clear, plus a 30-second rinse, and you have sent roughly 150 to 250 gallons to waste. On a 20,000-gallon pool that is about 1% of your water — balanced, stabilized, paid-for water — replaced by fresh fill that dilutes your CYA and calcium. Do that fortnightly out of habit and you have quietly re-plumbed your chemistry budget.

Never move the multiport valve with the pump running. It is the fastest way to destroy the spider gasket, and a blown gasket presents as water running continuously to waste.

Deep-clean chemically about once a year. A backwash lifts debris; it does not lift the oils (sunscreen, body oils) or the mineral scale that a hose cannot touch. Use a purpose-made filter cleaner and follow its label — oils and minerals need different chemistry, and the label knows which one it is.

On replacing the sand: the common “every 3 to 5 years” is softer than it sounds. Silica does not wear out in a backyard pool. It fails in three diagnosable ways:

Replace on symptoms, not on a birthday. A well-run filter goes well past five years; a neglected one fails in two.

Cartridge: the routine

Pull and hose, between the pleats. Aim the spray down into each fold and work around the element, rather than washing across the outside. That is where the dirt actually is.

Never a pressure washer. It drives embedded grit deeper into the fabric instead of lifting it out, and it splits pleats. If a hose will not shift it, it is oil, and oil needs a soak — not more force.

Soak two or three times a season, or whenever hosing stops restoring the pressure.

What a filter cleaner actually is, and the order that matters

Two different jobs get sold as one product, and doing them in the wrong order is why people conclude neither works.

Acid on grease gums the pleats up worse, which is why spa makers tell you to degrease before you ever reach for an acid cleaner. Do it the other way round and you can finish with a dirtier filter than you started with.

Two things worth knowing before you spend anything, both from Trouble Free Pool’s read of the actual safety data sheets across this category:

  • The powders are 30–50% sodium percarbonate, plus sodium carbonate and 1–5% enzymes and surfactants. OxiClean is roughly 50% percarbonate, so a scoop of oxygen bleach gets you most of the way — what a dedicated cleaner adds is the enzyme blend and the right pH, not a secret active.
  • The liquids are acids and alcohols, and mostly water. Useful if your problem is genuinely mineral deposits; otherwise, in TFP’s phrase, you are paying for the transportation of water.

Two more things that do not work, so you can stop reading blog posts about them: vinegar is too weak an acid to shift minerals, and bleach is not recommended at all — at the concentration needed to clean, it damages the filter media.

Method decides the result here more than the product does. The owners who report this doing nothing soaked for an hour; the owners who report it working use warm water, the full label dose, four hours to overnight, a jostle every couple of hours to move solution through the pleats, and a jet rinse afterwards to carry the loosened oil out.

The faster option, and what it does and does not replace

A soak takes the cartridge out of service overnight, and that is the real reason people skip cleaning. There is a spray route: work it into the pleats, wait a few minutes, hose it out, refit.

It stretches the interval between soaks rather than replacing them, and the best evidence for that is an owner running both: “Works really well! I still soak them but much less often.” The label says no soaking; the owner record says it is a maintenance clean. Owners who wanted soak-grade results from it are most of the complaints — on genuine suntan-oil loading, one says flatly it is “not a wonder product.”

Two honest warnings. The recurring failure on this one is the container, not the cleaner — owners repeatedly report the spray head separating from the bottle mid-use and spilling, often enough that one calls the defective bottle the listing’s defining complaint. And the listing defaults to a $54.99 quart-plus-gallon combo; the 1-quart at about $24 is the size most pool owners want, so check the size selector before you buy.

Buy a second set. This is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade on this page: swap the spare in wet, clean the dirty set whenever you feel like it, and the pool is never waiting on you. On replacing elements: two to three years is fair, but check the end caps and the banding, not just the fabric. A lifted cap or a cracked core lets dirty water bypass the media entirely — which presents as a filter that will not clear the pool however often you clean it, and sends people chasing chemistry that was never the problem.

The gauge itself is a wear part

Worth knowing before you diagnose anything with it: pressure gauges fail, usually by sticking or by reading low. If your pressure has not moved in months on a pool that is clearly catching debris, suspect the gauge before you congratulate the filter. They cost very little and they are the instrument the whole page depends on.

The spec that matters is the range, and most buyers get it wrong. A pool filter runs about 10–25 PSI. On a 0–60 dial that band spans a third of the face and the 8–10 PSI trigger above is unmistakable. On the 0–100, 0–160 and 0–300 gauges sold right beside it, the same rise is a needle twitch in the first fifth of the sweep — you have bought a gauge that cannot show you the only number you need from it.

Check which way your filter’s port faces before ordering. Most pool filters take a bottom (lower) mount, but back-mount gauges exist and look identical in a listing photo — this one is sold both ways. And go gently on the threads: the recurring complaint on cheap gauges is threads cut undersize, and one owner reports a bad fit damaging the air-relief valve it screwed into.

When should I backwash my sand filter?

When the pressure gauge reads roughly 8 to 10 PSI above your filter's clean baseline — the pressure it showed right after its last proper service, with air bled out and the pump at its normal speed. That baseline is the whole trick, because the rule is relative to your system and not an absolute number: two healthy pools can sit at 10 and 18 PSI when clean. Never backwash on a schedule. A sand bed traps finer particles as it loads, so a filter that is a little dirty is doing a better job than one you just cleaned, and backwashing early throws away water and chemistry to make your filtration coarser.

How do I find my filter's clean baseline pressure?

Can I use a pressure washer on a pool cartridge?

No, and it is the most common way owners destroy elements early. A pressure washer drives embedded grit deeper into the fabric instead of lifting it out, and it will cut or split pleats outright. A garden hose with a normal nozzle, aimed down between the pleats and worked around the element, removes what is meant to come out. Anything the hose will not shift is oil, and the answer to oil is a soak, not more force.

Do I really need to replace filter sand every 3 to 5 years?

Yes, and it is a real cost worth counting, especially where water is metered or restricted.
