First: what are you actually looking at?
Four marks, four causes. Run the quick test that matches what you see:
- Rub a crushed vitamin C tablet on it. Lightens in seconds → it’s a metal stain (jump to Metal stains).

Color helps too: rust-brown/orange = iron; teal or blue-green (sometimes black) = copper; purple-brown = manganese; green or reddish-brown that appeared under leaves or acorns = organic. Now match the mark to its fix.
Metal stains (rust, teal, purple-black)
Metal stains happen when dissolved iron, copper, or manganese in the water oxidizes and plates onto the surface. The metal gets there three ways: fill or well water that’s naturally high in iron; a metal part corroding because the pH was allowed to run too low (a heat exchanger, a light niche, a rusty screw); or copper-based algaecides used too freely. Chlorine oxidizes that metal and drops it onto the walls as a stain.
The removal chemistry is a mild acid that reduces the metal back into solution — and the right acid depends on the metal:
- Lower your free chlorine to near zero first. Chlorine destroys ascorbic acid and re-stains as you go — the treatment fails if FC is up. Lower pH toward 7.0 as well.
- Add ascorbic acid (vitamin C powder), about ½ lb per 10,000 gallons to start, pump running. A light stain often lifts in minutes; you can also press a stain-removal “sock” of powder right against a stubborn spot.
- Immediately add a metal sequestrant and keep it dosed. This is the step people skip — see the warning below.
- Return chlorine slowly over the next day or two, watching for the stain to try to return.
Copper is different — don’t use vitamin C on it. Ascorbic acid on a copper stain can turn it black (it catalyzes the copper oxidizing further), making it worse. Copper stains respond to citric acid instead. And citric acid isn’t for repeated whole-pool treatments — if copper keeps staining, the fix is removing the copper source, not re-treating.
The step that makes it stick: sequester and fix the source. Lifting the stain only moves the metal back into the water — it’s still there. The moment chlorine recovers, it re-oxidizes that metal and it plates right back on. So the job isn’t done until you (1) add a metal sequestrant (“stain & scale” / “metal control”) and keep it dosed so the filter and time carry the metal out, and (2) fix what put the metal there — a hose pre-filter for iron-heavy fill water, and keeping pH in range so metal parts stop corroding. Skip either and the stain is back within days.
About baking soda and lemon juice. Lemon juice is weak citric acid — the same family as the real treatment — so rubbing a cut lemon or a vitamin C tablet on a small fresh spot genuinely works as a test or a tiny spot-fix. It’s just far too weak and too small to treat a pool; the real version is ascorbic- or citric-acid powder (a few dollars a pound — the same active ingredient inside the pricey “stain remover” bottles). Baking soda is the wrong direction: it’s a base that raises pH, and metal stains come off with acid. As a mild abrasive it can scrub loose grime, but it will never dissolve a metal stain.
Organic stains (leaves, berries, algae)
If a chlorine tablet lifts the mark, it’s organic — tannins from leaves, acorns, berries, worms, or a dead algae spot. These are the easy ones: they come off with oxidation, not acid.
- A single spot: hold a trichlor tablet directly on it for a minute or two, or set a chlorine “puck” on it (in a shallow pool with the surface exposed).
- Widespread organic staining or an algae origin: raise chlorine and SLAM the pool (shock and hold the level until it clears). Brush the stained areas as the chlorine works.
Do not treat an organic stain with ascorbic acid — it won’t touch it, and you’ll have wasted a metal treatment on the wrong problem. (This is exactly why the two-tablet test up top matters.) And if dark spots keep regrowing in the same place after you brush, it isn’t a stain at all — it’s a living colony of black algae, which needs its own attack.
The brown scum line (the greasy waterline ring)
That brown or grey greasy band right at the waterline isn’t a stain or scale at all — it’s body oils, sunscreen, lotion, sweat, and hair products, plus airborne pollen and dust, collecting where the water meets air and baking onto the tile or liner. It smears when you wipe it. So you clean it, you don’t chemically “treat” it:

What to buy for the scum line
Two products do this job, and the cheap one is the one that stops it coming back.
The enzyme cleaner, for the band that’s already there. Enzymes digest the oils so the grime releases instead of being scoured off — which is why owners describe the same workflow the guide does: spray it, let it sit, then a melamine sponge does the rest in minutes.
Read its vinyl caution before you buy it. Two owners report it damaging a liner in opposite directions — one “completely removed the color off my liner”, the other got dark stains and drip marks that vinegar would not lift — while other liner owners report no trouble at all. Both say the same thing: spot-test first. So it isn’t universal, but the downside is permanent: on vinyl, test a hidden spot and wait before you touch the visible band. On tile or plaster it’s the straightforward pick.
And temper the expectation on a heavy ring. We wrote “the sponge does the rest in minutes” above, and on a light band that holds. On a thick, season-old scum line it often doesn’t: six of the ten critical reviews are owners who still had to scrub hard and long, or who found it barely touched a suntan-oil ring on fiberglass. Think of it as a soak that loosens the band so the sponge has less to fight, not as something that lifts it on its own. Which is the argument for the absorber below — the band you never let form is the one you never have to scrub.
The absorber, so the band doesn’t come back. This is the part most people skip and it’s the cheapest thing on the page — about $8, sitting in the skimmer basket, soaking up oils before they ever reach the tile.
Honest note on that one: its 9,151-rating base is mostly hot tub owners — only one of the thirteen reviews we read describes a pool. The physical job is identical, a foam that absorbs oil floating in water, so we’re comfortable with it; you should just know the evidence isn’t pool-specific.
And the sponge: buy any melamine one. We’re deliberately not naming a brand there. Melamine foam is melamine foam — the “magic eraser” you already have under the sink is the same material as anything sold with a pool label on it, usually at a fraction of the price. There’s no decision for us to make for you, and no product review base worth reading, because almost every one of them is a household-cleaning buyer rather than a pool owner. Just don’t take it near a vinyl liner.
If you have a printed vinyl liner
This is the case the rest of the page can’t serve, so it gets its own answer. Nearly every residential vinyl liner is printed — the tile band and the mosaic pattern are ink on the surface, not texture in it — and everything that makes a scum line come off easily is also what takes ink off.
We looked for a vinyl-safe waterline cleaner to recommend here and did not find one we’d stand behind. That is the honest result, and the reason is worth more than a pick would have been.
The category’s most-bought “vinyl-safe” cleaner excludes printed liners in its own fine print. Star Brite’s Home Pool Waterline Cleaner has the deepest owner base in this category and its listing sells it as “Ideal for tile, vinyl, plaster, fiberglass” — while the warning further down the same page reads, verbatim: “Do not use on painted or ink printed surfaces, including printed vinyl liners, faux tile patterns, wraps, or decals, as it may damage or remove printed designs.” Both sentences are on the same listing. If you read the bullet that sells it and not the one that limits it — which is the normal way anyone shops — you would buy it for exactly the surface it tells you to keep it off. It also instructs you to use “the included Star brite Magic Sponge”, which is melamine foam: the one thing this whole section exists to keep away from your liner.
The one that doesn’t carry that exclusion has a weak record. In The Swim’s Super Pool Tile and Vinyl Cleaner names vinyl with no printed-liner warning, and it’s alkaline rather than acid — but it sits at 3.9 stars, and reading its critical reviews, the dominant complaint is simply that it didn’t do anything. A good share of those are people using a degreaser on the wrong problem (a metal stain or calcium scale, which is what the two-tablet test at the top of this page exists to sort out), but not all of them: two owners describe exactly our job, a vinyl waterline, and say it made no difference. That’s not enough for us to send you to it.
And “waterline scrubbers” are the same trap wearing a different label. The most-reviewed one states only that it’s “safe on acrylic or roto-moulded spa surfaces”, lists its material as nothing more specific than “Sponge”, and its reviewers are hot tub owners. A product whose entire job is being gentle on a surface, that won’t say what it’s made of, isn’t a recommendation.
So here’s what actually works on a printed liner — a method, not a bottle:
- Let enzymes do the work instead of friction. Enzymes digest the oils so the band releases rather than being scoured off, which is the only mechanism here that isn’t attacking the print. That’s the same enzyme cleaner named above — and read its own vinyl caution before you buy, because two owners report it lifting liner colour.
- Wipe with a soft microfiber cloth, never melamine, never a scrub pad, never anything you’d describe as “scrubbing”.
- Test a hidden spot first and wait. Pick a patch below the waterline where nobody looks, treat it, and come back the next day. Every product in this category carries some risk to a printed pattern, including the ones sold as vinyl-safe, and the damage is permanent.
- Lean much harder on prevention than a tile owner needs to. The oil absorber in the skimmer and a weekly wipe before the band hardens cost a few dollars and no risk at all. On a printed liner that isn’t housekeeping advice, it’s the actual strategy — a band that never bakes on never needs a cleaner.
- Hang an oil-absorbing sponge or “scumball” in the skimmer basket — it soaks up oils before they reach the waterline.
- Wipe the waterline weekly, before the band hardens and bakes on.
- Run the filter through heavy-use, high-sunscreen days, and consider a weekly enzyme dose if your pool sees a lot of swimmers.
- Ask swimmers to rinse off sunscreen and lotion before getting in — sunscreen also burns through chlorine fast.
White calcium scale on tile and glass
The hard, white-to-grey crust that won’t wipe off — on tile, at the waterline, on a salt cell — is calcium, not dirt. It forms when the water is oversaturated with calcium (a positive saturation index), driven by high pH, high calcium hardness, high alkalinity, and warm water. There are two kinds, and they remove very differently:
- Calcium carbonate (the common kind): white, and it fizzes with a drop of muriatic acid. Comes off with acid or gentle abrasion.
- Calcium silicate (from very high pH): a harder grey scale that doesn’t fizz — acid won’t dissolve it.

What the pool store sells instead is a shelf of look-alike bottles, and the wrong one doesn’t just waste money — a “stain remover” won’t touch scale, a “scale bottle” won’t touch a scum line, and baking soda makes a metal stain worse. Identify the mark first, use the matching fix, and then prevent the repeat with balance and a brush.
