THE FAILURE MODE IS ALWAYS THE SAME: unlevel ground. Intex is blunt that setting up on unleveled ground makes the sidewall bulge and can collapse the pool, and the fix is to drain it and start over. Their own test is free - fill with one inch of water and see if it runs to one side. One trade-off to know before you buy: resin resists rust and suits saltwater, but you generally should not fully bury an all-resin pool, while steel walls are the stronger choice for a buried install.

Rounds in the rigid-wall class run 12 to 33 feet in 3-foot increments, and most are now offered with 52- or 54-inch walls (48 is the older standard). That size range is the real argument for a rigid wall: nothing in the soft-sided classes gets near 33 feet.
The number everyone gets wrong: wall height is not water depth
You are sold the WALL. You swim in the WATER. The water has to sit below the top of the wall — roughly the middle of the skimmer — so the two numbers are never the same. And the industry does not agree on the gap:

That’s a four-inch spread on the one measurement that decides whether an adult can stand comfortably or a child can touch. Four inches is the difference between chest-deep and chin-deep for a lot of people, and it is entirely invisible if you shop on the box number.
What to do about it: ask the seller for the water depth at the skimmer midpoint, in inches, for the specific model — not the wall height. If they can’t answer, that tells you something too.
What depth do you actually get? Run your wall height
An above-ground pool is sold on its wall height and swum in its water depth, and the published gap between the two runs from 4 to 8 inches depending on whose page you read. Enter the wall height and see the honest range rather than a made-up single number.

Then stop using the box number. The wall height is a manufacturing spec, not a swim spec. Ask the seller for the water depth at the skimmer midpoint, in inches, for the specific model — that is a datum you and they can both measure, and it is the only one that answers whether a person can stand up. The failure mode is always the same: unlevel ground
Every type on this page fails the same way, and it isn’t the liner or the pump. It’s the pad.
Intex is unusually direct about it. From the Easy Set manual, verbatim:
Setting up the pool on unleveled ground will cause the pool to tilt resulting in the sidewall material to bulge and a potential collapse of the pool. If the pool is not completely level, you must drain the pool, level the area and re-fill the pool.
And in the safety rules:
Failure to set up pool on flat, level, compact ground or over filling could result in the pool’s collapse and the possibility that a person lounging in the pool could be swept out/ejected.
“Swept out/ejected” is the manufacturer’s own phrasing, and it is a fair description of what several thousand gallons does when a wall lets go.
Manufacturers generally work to within about an inch across the full diameter. On a 24-foot round that’s a tighter tolerance than it sounds, and it’s why the honest install time for a rigid-wall pool is dominated by ground prep rather than assembly.

Before you commit the water, use the pool as its own spirit level:
- Fill with no more than one inch of water.
- Look at whether it runs to one side. If it does, the pad is not level.
- Drain, re-level, start again — which is cheap now and miserable at 10,000 gallons.
That is straight out of the manual, it costs nothing, and it is the single highest-value five minutes in an above-ground install.
Resin or steel? The two answers pull in opposite directions
This is the trade-off that catches people, because the right answer flips depending on which problem you’re solving.
- Going saltwater? Resin. Salt is hard on metal, and an all-resin pool — resin frame and resin wall — sidesteps corrosion entirely. Royal Swimming Pools notes all-resin pools “perform very well with saltwater systems.”
- Going semi-inground? Steel. The same source is blunt the other way: “In most cases, you should not fully bury an all-resin pool.” Resin “can become brittle in extreme cold or warp in intense heat,” and “burying a resin pool adds constant soil pressure and moisture exposure, increasing the risk of cracking and structural failure.” For buried installs they call steel wall pools “usually the stronger and safer option when properly protected with slurry backfill and adequate drainage.”
So a saltwater semi-inground pool is a pool being pulled two ways at once. That’s not an impossible build, but it is one where you need the manufacturer of your specific model to confirm both in writing.
Flag on this one: it’s contested. Other retailers claim resin handles burial better than steel. We’re naming the disagreement rather than picking a winner, because the stakes are a buried wall you can’t inspect. Get burial-within-spec in writing from the manufacturer before a shovel moves. Note too that many pools are hybrids — resin frames and top rails over a resin-coated steel wall — built precisely to get some of each, so ask by construction rather than by the word “resin” or “steel” on the box.
What the type actually decides
- Buy an Easy Set for a first pool, a rental, or a yard you might want back. Ten minutes to water, and the ring is the fill line.
- Buy a metal frame when you want real depth and a rectangular swim area without a permanent installation. Expect a genuine assembly, and expect it to be unforgiving about square.
- Buy a rigid wall when the pool is staying. It’s the only class that reaches 33 feet, the only one with a proper wall, and the one where ground prep decides whether you’re happy in year five.
- Buy semi-inground when you want the in-ground look for a fraction of in-ground money — and confirm the burial spec first.
What an above-ground pool can’t have
Worth saying plainly, because it’s the most common disappointment: the in-pool seating features people want are in-ground only. A sun shelf, a bench, a bump-out and built-in bar stools all need a poured or moulded shell. An above-ground pool has a flat floor and a vinyl liner hung inside a wall — there is nothing to carve a seat into and no floor to anchor a stool to, and the bolt-on swim-up bar tops that exist need a deck or coping an above-ground wall doesn’t have. If those features are the point, you’re shopping in-ground pool types and the in-pool seating decisions that go with them.
What you can do is build a deck to the rim, which is why the wood-faced and semi-inground classes exist.
Two safety rules that come from the manual, not from us
- Never dive, jump or slide into an above-ground pool. Intex lists it among its top safety rules, and the water-depth arithmetic above is exactly why: you are diving into roughly four feet at best.
- Drain rain water that pushes the level above maximum. Over-filling is named alongside unlevel ground as a collapse risk, and heavy Florida summer rain will do it in an afternoon.
Barrier rules apply too — Intex’s manual cites a barrier at least 48 inches above grade with no more than 4 inches of clearance underneath — but your local code governs, and above-ground pools are not exempt from it.
