Concrete (Plaster) vs. Fiberglass vs. Vinyl: The Honest Pool-Type Comparison

Short answer

Concrete/gunite (finished in plaster, or a tougher pebble/quartz aggregate) is the most durable and the only fully custom option — but the priciest to build (~$55k–$120k+), the roughest surface, the most chemical- and brushing-hungry, and it needs resurfacing every 7–12 years for plaster or 15–20 for aggregate ($6k–$15k). Fiberglass (a one-piece molded shell) installs fastest and needs the least upkeep — its smooth, non-porous gelcoat uses roughly 25–50% fewer chemicals and resists algae — but you're limited to factory shapes (about 16 ft max width, 8 ft deep) and the gelcoat can fade or blister over decades. There are three ways to build an in-ground pool, and picking between them is the single biggest decision a pool buyer makes — it sets your up-front cost, your maintenance for the next 20 years, how the pool feels underfoot, and how much you’ll spend keeping it looking new. Here’s the honest, all-aspects comparison, with real 2026 numbers and the Florida factors most builders won’t lead with.

First, clear up the labels, because they cause half the confusion. Gunite is the structure — concrete sprayed over a steel frame to form the shell. Plaster is the finish — the smooth coat troweled onto that shell. So “plaster vs gunite” isn’t a real matchup; a plaster pool is a gunite pool. The actual three choices are:

  • Concrete / gunite — the sprayed-concrete shell, finished in plaster (traditional white marcite) or a tougher pebble/quartz aggregate.
  • Fiberglass — a one-piece molded shell with a smooth gelcoat surface, craned into the hole.
  • Vinyl-linersteel or polymer wall panels lined with a replaceable vinyl membrane.

The short version

  • Concrete/gunite: the most durable and the only fully custom option — any shape, size, or depth. But the most expensive to build, the roughest surface, the hungriest for chemicals and brushing, and it needs resurfacing every 7–20 years. Buy it for permanence and design freedom, not convenience.

Concrete / gunite (plaster or aggregate finish)

How it’s built: concrete is sprayed over a steel-rebar cage and shaped, then cured and finished — with plaster, or a longer-lasting pebble/quartz aggregate, or tile. It’s built in place, so it can be any shape, any size, any depth — the reason every dramatic custom pool, vanishing edge, and deep diving well is gunite.

The finish ladder — plaster → quartz → pebble. The finish is the coat troweled onto the shell, and it decides how the pool feels, how long it lasts, and how often you resurface. Three families, cheapest and shortest-lived first:

  • Plaster (white marcite): the traditional cement-and-marble-dust coat — smoothest when new, cheapest, and shortest-lived (7–12 years). It’s pure cement at the surface, so aggressive water etches it fastest.
  • Quartz aggregate: plaster with crushed quartz blended in — tougher, more stain-resistant, holds color better, ~12–15 years for a step up in price.
  • Pebble aggregate: small natural pebbles exposed at the surface — the most durable finish you can put on a gunite pool (15–25 years, 20+ with steady care). It lasts because the cement binder is largely washed off the surface, so the water contacts the pebbles — and pebbles resist chemical attack far better than any cement binder, which is why Trouble Free Pool owners call it the forgiving finish. It’s also the priciest and the roughest underfoot, and that roughness is a choice you make within the pebble line.

PebbleTec vs. PebbleSheen vs. PebbleFina — one finish, three textures. Pebble Technology International makes the finish most builders mean when they say “pebble,” and its three residential tiers differ mostly by pebble size and how they feel on bare feet:

  • PebbleTec — the original, largest pebbles. The most natural, earthy look and the most non-slip, but the roughest: stand flat-footed on it a while and you’ll feel it. The pick for a lagoon look and for sloped entries where grip matters.
  • PebbleSheen — smaller pebbles, a more refined surface that’s noticeably smoother than the original while staying non-slip. It’s the most popular of the three — the middle ground most owners land on.
  • PebbleFina — finely ground pebbles, the smoothest aggregate finish PTI makes, nearly plaster-smooth underfoot. The trade-off: it’s the fussiest to keep even and can blotch if the startup and water chemistry aren’t dialed in.
  • PebbleBrilliance builds glass beads and stone into the finish itself for a shimmer look — decorative, and priced up.

PebbleTec isn’t the only pebble — and the names don’t translate. Pebble Technology is the brand most builders mean when they say “pebble,” but it is one of at least four manufacturers selling the same rungs of this ladder — and their tier names don’t line up. If you’re holding two bids, one quoting PebbleSheen and the other StoneScapes Mini, you are comparing brand names, not tiers. Those are the same rung. Here’s the translation nobody hands you:

Read that middle row again, because it’s the one that costs money. StoneScapes Mini is not a budget PebbleTec — it’s the PebbleSheen rung, and National Pool Tile says Mini “has been the most popular pebble size for over 15 years,” which is the same thing PTI says about PebbleSheen. Two makers, two names, one rung, and a builder who carries only one of them will describe the other as a step down. If you’re in Florida, the finish you’re most likely quoted isn’t a Pebble Technology product at all. SGM — the maker of Diamond Brite — is a Pompano Beach company, and Diamond Brite is a quartz finish: “an exposed aggregate pool finish made from selected quartz aggregates blended with polymer-modified white Portland cement,” in SGM’s words. It sits on the quartz rung, one below pebble, and SGM’s own lifespan number for it is 10–15 years — close to the ~12–15 this page gives the quartz rung, and from the manufacturer rather than an installer. So a Diamond Brite quote and a PebbleTec quote are not the same product at a different price — they’re different rungs, and the gap in the bid should reflect that. The fourth rung this ladder is missing: polished. Plaster → quartz → pebble is the standard ladder, but three of these four makers sell a polished finish that doesn’t fit on it. CL Industries’ Hydrazzo is polished marble — “blended white marble aggregates, graded color aggregates, and other composites to achieve a silky smooth, yet non-slip, finish.” NPT’s PolishedScapes is marble and glass aggregate polished with diamond abrasives. Wet Edge’s Primera Stone is a polished pebble: the same natural pebble aggregate, but polished after curing with diamond abrasive discs rather than washed to expose it. Polishing gets to smoothness by a different route than PTI’s finer grind, which is why a polished finish can feel plaster-smooth without being plaster.

The reason to care about polished isn’t the feel — it’s that you can renew it. A polished finish can be re-polished years later to bring back the original luster; NPT says polishing “is the most benign fix and overcomes the need for patching or replastering,” and Wet Edge says Primera Stone “can often be repolished” where mineral buildup or staining has set in, subject to its certified applicator’s evaluation. No other rung offers that. Every other finish on this page ends its life with a drain and a resurface. If you’re weighing a premium finish and expect to keep the house 20 years, a renewable surface is a different financial proposition from a disposable one — ask the bidder to price the re-polish, not just the install.

Want more sparkle? The glass-bead add-ins. You don’t have to jump to a fancier line to get shine. Pebble Technology International sells optional glass-bead enhancements you blend into any PebbleTec or PebbleSheen finish. Luminescence (branded Luminous) is a smooth, iridescent glass bead that gives the water a glistening shimmer, offered in three blends — Blue, Emerald, and Jade. Shimmering Sea is a similar reflective add-in (already baked into PebbleFina, PebbleBrilliance, and a few other blends, but it can be added to PebbleTec or PebbleSheen too). Both are upgrades layered onto the base finish, so you pick the pebble texture first and decide how much sparkle you want on top. One maintenance note: hold your water chemistry steady and skip harsh chemicals — that’s what keeps the beads’ iridescence from dulling over the years.

The catch nobody leads with: that long pebble lifespan is not a long warranty. PTI’s residential warranty covers the material against defects for 5 years, only when a PTI-authorized applicator installs it, and it’s non-transferable to the next owner; the workmanship is a separate warranty from your installer (usually 5 years minimum). So “pebble lasts 20 years” is its real-world lifespan, not a two-decade guarantee — and it hinges on a certified crew, which is also your quality signal: a pebble finish is only as good as the applicator who exposes and finishes it.

So the lesson above isn’t that pool-finish warranties are all short — it’s that Pebble Technology’s is, relative to its rivals. The spread across these five runs from one year to lifetime, and PTI sits near the bottom of it. That is not proof PTI makes a worse finish; a warranty is a claim about a manufacturer’s confidence and its dealer channel, not a lab result. But it is a real, checkable difference that no builder will raise, and it belongs in the comparison.

Three things to read closely before you weigh any of them:

  • SGM’s clock starts at manufacture, not installation. That is the only one of the five that does, and it means the material can burn through part of its warranty sitting in a warehouse. SGM’s own shelf life for Diamond Brite is up to one year — the same length as the warranty.
  • CL Industries contradicts itself on its own website. Its warranty-parameters page warrants preblended finishes against manufacturing defect “for 10 years from the date of installation”; its Contact FAQ says “we provide five year warranties for all of our finishes.” Both pages are live. Get the term in writing on your own registration form and don’t take either page as the answer.
  • All of them void on water chemistry, and one wants receipts. CL Industries requires that pool water be “tested regularly and documented monthly by a reputable company using a computerized system,” and states plainly that failure to provide monthly printed reports will void the warranty. SGM says improper water chemistry voids its limited warranty too. If you’re not paying a service company that issues printed monthly reports, a 10-year warranty may functionally be a zero-year warranty.

And check what the warranty excludes before you design the pool. CL Industries’ terms exclude “negative edges, dam walls, beach entries, rolled bond beams, spillways, and waterfalls” — which is to say the tanning ledge, the vanishing edge, and the water feature, the three things a Florida buyer is most likely to be sold. Registration windows are short and easy to blow: 30 days for CL Industries, 60 for Wet Edge. Every one of these five is a material warranty covering replacement material only — labor to drain, chip out and re-shoot the pool is your installer’s warranty, and a separate conversation.

Durability & longevity: the shell is the longest-lived of the three — 50 to 100 years. The finish is the catch: plaster needs resurfacing every 7–12 years (it erodes, stains, and etches), while a pebble/quartz aggregate finish lasts 15–20+ years for roughly double the cost. Resurfacing runs about $6,000–$8,000 for plaster and $7,000–$15,000 for aggregate. Concrete can also crack with ground movement and etch if the water chemistry goes aggressive.

Cleanability & feel: this is concrete’s weak spot. The surface is rough, porous, and abrasive — hard on bare feet and swimsuits, and worse as the plaster ages. The pores anchor algae and stains, so it needs vigorous weekly brushing to stay clean.

Maintenance & chemistry: the highest of the three, because the surface fights you. Plaster is calcium-based cement that leaches into the water and pushes pH up — especially in its first months (the “plaster cure”) — so you’re adding acid constantly. And you have to hold the water balanced-to-slightly-positive (calcium hardness ~200–275 ppm, pH 7.4–7.6, a neutral-to-positive LSI) or aggressive water etches and pits the finish. More chemicals, more brushing, more attention.

Pros: longest-lived shell; unlimited custom design; premium look; endlessly renovatable. Cons: highest up-front cost and longest build; rough abrasive surface; highest chemical and brushing load; recurring resurfacing; cracks, etches, and stains; the surface actively drives your chemistry.

Fiberglass

How it’s built: the shell is molded in a factory as one piece and delivered whole, then craned into a prepared hole and backfilled. Because it arrives on a truck, it’s limited to shapes and sizes that fit the mold and the road — about 16 feet maximum width, ~8 feet deep, in fixed factory designs.

Durability & longevity: a fiberglass shell realistically lasts about 25–30 years (you’ll see “50+” from sellers — treat that as optimistic). It can’t crack the way concrete does, but the gelcoat has its own failure modes over the long haul: osmotic blistering (water seeping through gelcoat pores), fading and chalking (UV, worst on dark colors), and fine spider-crazing. A gelcoat refinish lands somewhere in the 15–25-year window if you keep the pool that long ($5k–$15k) — less often than concrete’s plaster cadence, which is its real economic edge, but not “never.”

Cleanability & feel: the best of the three. The gelcoat is smooth and non-porous, so algae struggles to take hold, it wipes clean, robots glide, and it’s gentle on feet and suits. Avoid abrasive pads and undiluted acid, which dull the gelcoat.

Maintenance & chemistry: the lowest. The surface is inert — it doesn’t leach, so pH stays more stable and you need less acid and roughly 25–50% fewer chemicals than concrete, with only occasional soft-brushing. “Low maintenance,” not “no maintenance” — you still balance the water.

Pros: fastest install (in the water in weeks); lowest chemical and maintenance load; no liner and no plaster cadence; smooth, algae-resistant, non-abrasive surface; the best saltwater compatibility. Cons: fixed factory shapes and the ~16 ft width / ~8 ft depth ceiling; blistering/fading/crazing are real over decades; floating risk if drained in a high water table; higher up-front cost than vinyl.

Vinyl-liner

How it’s built: steel or polymer wall panels are set on a footing, and a custom vinyl liner (typically 20–30 mil — under a millimeter thick) is fitted inside to hold the water. It’s the least expensive way into an in-ground pool and offers more shape flexibility than fiberglass.

Durability & longevity: the walls last decades (polymer won’t corrode; galvanized steel can, especially if the liner leaks), but the liner is the clock — replace it every 7–10 years at $3,000–$7,500 installed. Thicker 27–28 mil liners last longer than thin 20 mil ones. Liners tear and puncture (rocks, sharp toys, branches, dog claws), wrinkle if the water drops too low or runs acidic, and fade and embrittle with UV — worst at the sunny waterline. Manufacturer warranties (20–25 years) are prorated and cover defects, not fade or wear, so real life is far shorter than the warranty.

Cleanability & feel: smooth and soft — the gentlest surface on feet and suits, and algae-resistant like fiberglass. The cautions: no wire or stiff brushes (they scratch or hole the liner), watch for punctures, and use only vinyl-safe robots with soft rubber/PVA brushes and rubber wheels — no hard bristles.

Maintenance & chemistry: the middle of the pack. The liner is inert and doesn’t raise pH like plaster, so you use fewer chemicals than concrete and brush less. The one gotcha: liners are sensitive to low pH (below ~7.0), which leaches the plasticizers and makes the vinyl brittle — so don’t let a vinyl pool run acidic.

So which should you buy?

  • Choose concrete/gunite if you want a specific custom shape, a deep or diving pool, a vanishing edge, or the most permanent, highest-resale pool — and you accept the highest up-front price, the most maintenance, and resurfacing down the road. Going salt or want the least upkeep? Spend up for a pebble/quartz aggregate finish over plain plaster.
  • Choose fiberglass if you want the easiest ownership and the best total cost — fast install, the fewest chemicals, a smooth algae-resistant surface — and one of the factory shapes fits your yard. It’s the low-hassle default for most families, and the best surface for a saltwater pool.
  • Choose vinyl-liner if up-front budget is the priority and you’re fine planning for a liner replacement every 7–10 years. You get a soft surface and a lower entry price; just protect the liner (soft tools, vinyl-safe robots, no full drains, no acidic water).

The Florida factors nobody leads with

Three things matter more here than almost anywhere:

1. The high water table can float your pool. Groundwater pressure pushes up under the shell. A full pool’s weight holds it down — but an empty fiberglass shell can pop out of the ground, and a drained vinyl liner can float off the walls. So: never fully drain a fiberglass or vinyl pool without a pro managing the groundwater (well-point dewatering), and make sure it has a working hydrostatic relief valve to bleed groundwater in and equalize pressure. Concrete is the most float-resistant when full — but even a drained gunite pool can lift without a functioning relief valve.

2. Salt is hardest on plaster. If you’re running (or planning) a salt chlorine pool: fiberglass handles salt best (non-reactive gelcoat); plaster/marcite wears faster under salt, and salt cells nudge pH up so you’re adding more acid to protect the finish — pick an aggregate finish over plain plaster for a salt concrete pool. For vinyl, the liner is fine but use polymer wall panels, not steel, so salt can’t corrode the structure.

3. The long season amplifies everything. Near-year-round swimming and intense UV mean more cumulative chemical and brushing load — which widens fiberglass’s low-maintenance advantage, intensifies concrete’s demand, and shortens vinyl liner life (shade and covers help). A screen enclosure cuts the debris, algae, and UV load on every surface, and specifically slows vinyl fading.

Whichever you own, the gear changes with the surface

Your pool type decides more than looks. It sets which robot and brush type is safe (soft PVA/rubber for vinyl and fiberglass; heavier scrubbers OK on cured plaster), how much your water balance has to protect the surface (positive LSI to keep plaster from etching; not-too-low pH to keep a liner from embrittling), and how a salt system treats the finish. Match the gear to the surface and both last longer.

The brush is where this bites first

It’s the cheapest piece of gear you’ll buy and the one most likely to damage your pool, because the bristle material is the whole decision and the category hides it. One popular maker sells the same 18-inch head in nylon, wire and a 50/50 combo — near-identical listings, and two of the three will shred a vinyl liner.

Nylon is the answer for every surface here — plaster, pebble, gelcoat and vinyl alike:

Stainless is a plaster-and-gunite-only tool, and only for a specific job: scrubbing open the waxy cap on black algae spots. It has no business on fiberglass or vinyl at any price.

Which pool type is easiest to keep clean and maintain?

Fiberglass, clearly. Its gelcoat surface is smooth and non-porous, so algae can't take hold, it wipes clean, and — because the surface is inert and doesn't leach — it needs roughly 25–50% fewer chemicals and far less brushing than concrete. Vinyl is second: also smooth and algae-resistant, but you must use only soft brushes and vinyl-safe robots (no wire bristles) and watch for punctures. Concrete/plaster is the most work: the rough, porous surface anchors algae, demands vigorous weekly brushing, and its cement chemistry actively pushes pH up so you're adding acid constantly.

How long does each pool type last?

The concrete shell lasts longest — 50 years or more — but its plaster finish needs redoing every 7–12 years (a pebble/quartz aggregate finish stretches that to 15–20+). A fiberglass shell realistically lasts about 25–30 years (the industry's '50+' is optimistic), with a gelcoat refinish somewhere in the 15–25-year window if you keep it. A vinyl pool's walls last decades, but the liner itself is the clock: plan on replacing it every 7–10 years. So 'longevity' depends on whether you mean the structure (concrete wins) or how long you go without a big refinishing bill (fiberglass wins).

Does the pool surface change my water chemistry?

Yes, and concrete is the big one. Plaster is calcium-based cement: it leaches into the water (especially when new), pushes pH up, and needs balanced-to-positive water — calcium hardness around 200–275 ppm and a neutral-to-slightly-positive LSI — or aggressive water will etch and pit the finish. Fiberglass and vinyl are inert and don't leach, so pH is more stable and you use fewer chemicals. Which pool type is best for a saltwater (salt chlorine) pool?

Fiberglass is the best match — its non-reactive gelcoat shrugs off salt entirely. For concrete, salt is harder on plaster/marcite over time (and salt cells nudge pH up, meaning more acid to protect the finish), so if you're going salt on a concrete pool, choose a quartz or pebble aggregate finish rather than plain white plaster. For vinyl, the liner itself is fine with salt, but salt corrodes metal — so a saltwater vinyl pool should use polymer wall panels, not galvanized steel, and you want to fix any liner leak fast before saltwater reaches the walls.

Can a pool really 'float' out of the ground in Florida?

Yes — and it's the number-one avoidable disaster here. Florida's high water table puts groundwater pressure under the shell. A full pool's weight holds it down, but an empty fiberglass shell can pop up out of the ground, and a drained vinyl pool's liner can float off the walls. That's why you never fully drain a fiberglass or vinyl pool without a pro managing the groundwater (well-point dewatering), and why both should have a working hydrostatic relief valve that bleeds groundwater in to equalize pressure. Concrete is the most float-resistant when full, but even a drained gunite pool can lift without a functioning relief valve.
