Every other page ranking in-ground cartridge filters compares square footage, micron ratings and lid design. Here is what none of them tell you: on these filters the model number decides your warranty, and it works in opposite directions depending on the brand. Buy a Hayward online and you are buying the short warranty. Buy a Pentair online and the pricier SKU is the one that gets you a full year — the cheaper one drops you to sixty days. Buy a Jandy online and you have no warranty at all.
So this roundup does not crown a single filter. It crowns two paths, because the right answer genuinely changes depending on whether a professional is installing it.
One more thing worth saying up front: these are multi-element filters, four cartridges clustered in one tank. Almost nobody tests these — and the difference between the pages that say they do
Most roundups on this site open with a synthesis of credentialed reviews. This one leans on owner records instead, and it is worth saying exactly why rather than asserting that nothing exists.
Consumer Reports does not rate pool filters at all — its only filter ratings are for under-sink water filters. The trade press does not compare them either: AQUA Magazine and Pool Magazine cover cartridge maintenance and media care, but neither runs a side-by-side brand test.
One mainstream outlet does cover the category. Bob Vila’s pool-filter roundup carries named authors and says of its process: “Testing was conducted on real residential pools, where we evaluated each filter’s performance, ease of installation, and impact on water clarity and pressure.” Their hands-on Best Overall is the Hayward StarClear Plus — which is a single-element filter, a different product class from the four-cartridge units on this page, and one we cover separately. Of the additional filters they list, including a Pentair Clean & Clear, they state plainly: “While we didn’t get hands-on time with these models, they stood out in our research.”
That sentence is the point, and it is why we cite them. Telling you which products you touched and which you only read about is the whole job. Compare it with another page ranking near the top for this category, which states that “we own and test every piece of equipment we recommend” and then gives no test dates, no methodology, no measurements, no photographs of its own units and no named author — an anonymous “editorial team” awarding every filter it covers between 3.9 and 4.7 out of 5. We are not linking that one.
So: one credentialed outlet has hands-on tested a filter in the wider category, and it is not one of the multi-element units ranked here. No independent lab has tested any of them. The one genuinely credentialed voice covering these specific models, pool specialist Swimming Pool Steve — a Pleatco Pool & Spa Industry Leadership award winner — declines to separate them at all: “So long as the filter that you choose is sized appropriately for your pool any of the brands and models on this page should be a good option.” An expert pointing at sizing rather than brand, which is where the owner records point too, arrived at independently.
That leaves the evidence on this page as owner records, read directly and read the same way on every product: the star average, what the base is actually made of, and the full critical tail — 901 owner ratings across eight filters, with the Hayward 425 and 525 sharing one pooled base of 244 between them, and every critical review among them read signed in on one day in August 2026. Where a rating sits on a listing we would not buy from, or is pooled across sizes, we say so. Combined with the recall record — nothing in this roundup has ever been recalled — the honest summary of this category’s evidence environment is that no lab tests these, no regulator has acted on one, and the expert who knows them best won’t pick between them.

The warranty is decided by the model number
This is the whole finding, and every line of it comes from the manufacturers’ own documents.
Hayward splits its catalogue. Its Open Line — the SKUs carrying a W3 prefix — is “approved for sale online,” and its published terms are one year parts, field labor none. The dealer-only line is listed at three years parts plus one year of field labor. Coverage explicitly “does not increase when sold via brick-and-mortar location… or installed by a professional,” so you cannot buy a W3 in a shop and recover the longer term. ⚠️ One caution we will not paper over: the SwimClear owner’s manual that ships in the box states one year, not three. The dated schedule and the manual disagree. Get the term in writing from the dealer before you count on it.
Pentair runs the same idea backwards. Its base limited warranty is sixty days, parts only. Products bought “from an Authorized Pentair Online Reseller” get one year. And Clean & Clear Plus is a TradeGrade product, which means a plain non-EC SKU “purchased online (via internet)… will only receive a sixty (60) day limited warranty.” So the EC- prefix is not a marketing flourish — it is ten extra months of coverage. We found the same 420 listed at $1,619 as EC-160301 and $1,299 as plain 160301 at one retailer on the same day.
Jandy simply excludes you. Its warranty “does not apply to Jandy branded products purchased through the Internet or other e-commerce platforms,” with an exception only for valves, parts and accessories. There is no online SKU that fixes it.
And a second condition applies to all three. Every one of these filters on Amazon is sold by a third-party marketplace seller — a different one on almost every listing, none of them Amazon and none of them the brand. Even where the listing carries a brand storefront byline, the seller underneath is somebody else: the Rx Clear ships from Save More On Pool Supplies, the XtremepowerUS from ihubdeal, the Waterway 325 from Four Seasons Pool Supply. Both Hayward and Pentair require an authorized seller on top of the right SKU. The prefix gets you halfway.

If nobody is installing this for you, the warranty argument that favours Hayward evaporates — online, both brands give you one year, parts only. At that point you are choosing on price and on evidence, and Pentair wins both. It reads 4.6★ across 139 owners, and among the reviews we could read there were no free-product reviews padding the score. It costs $160 less than the comparable Hayward. And its price held at $1,439 on Amazon and at the dealers we checked, so the number is real rather than a moving target.

It also carries the deepest owner base here that describes a single size: 4.6★ across 187. That distinction matters more than it sounds, as the next section shows.
The honest catch is arrival, not operation. Its complaint tail is the smallest in this roundup — five critical reviews in 187 — and two of the five are the unit turning up damaged, with one owner bounced between Amazon, Hayward and the seller over replacement parts. A lid O-ring that swells in summer heat and needs a strap wrench is worth knowing about, but it is not what owners here actually raise; one reviewer specifically praises how easily the canister opens. We read the critical reviews of every filter in this roundup, signed in, on the same day. Not the star scores, which are what every other page compares. The complaint tails. Here is what that looks like as a rate:

Two things fall out of that table, and neither is visible from a star rating.
First: the star rating actively misleads here. Waterway’s Crystal Water 425 reads 4.4★ — higher than the Pentair 420’s 4.2★ — while carrying a complaint tail that is almost entirely its tank splitting in service. On score alone you would buy the Waterway. On evidence you would not.
Second: a critical rate is not one thing, and comparing the numbers without reading them would have ranked these two together. Pentair’s 420 and Waterway’s 425 sit at 15.3% and 20.6% — near neighbours. They are nothing alike. Every one of Pentair’s nine complaints is the box arriving smashed: hardware missing, a cracked foot, a broken gauge, a top housing damaged in transit. That is discovered on day one and it is the seller’s problem. Every one of Waterway’s seven is the tank failing at year two or three, found when the water bill doubles, and refused as out of warranty. Same order of magnitude, opposite consequence.
So the value pick is the Pentair 420 at about $1,324 — $44 more than the Waterway. That is the most consequential forty-four dollars in this category.

What we found in the Waterway’s reviews, and why it lost the slot
The Waterway held this slot when we published, on the reasoning that it is the same filter as the majors for hundreds less. The construction claim is still true — Waterway’s own parts list confirms four cartridges in the same 325/425/525 ladder Hayward ships. What we had not done was read its complaint tail. When we did, all seven readable critical reviews described the same failure:
“Filter less then three years old. I was out of town and bottom of filter cracked. Flooded yard and neighbors yards. What a mess. Water bill 142 dollars.”
“It lasted for 2.5 years, bottom base crack, I didn’t realize until my water bill doubled.”
“Had it installed in May 2020 and in June 2023 the bottom is cracked and leaking. Out of warranty of course, so getting a new one that is NOT a Waterway.”
“Hairline crack in bottom of filter after 3 years. Only bought this off-brand since parts were scarce during covid. Last filter was 18 years strong! Manufacturer said too bad…we only warranty our filter.”
A filter that fails structurally just outside its term, and whose maker declines the claim, is not a value buy at any discount. It stays on this page because the construction claim was real and because you should be able to see the evidence that moved it.
Two things about that evidence, in fairness to Waterway. Four of the five recent crack reports are not marked Verified Purchase, and every recent positive review is. That is less suspicious than it sounds — filters this size are usually bought and fitted by an installer, so the owner never has a purchase record of their own, and the reviewers say exactly that. One crack report is verified. But the split is real and we would rather print it than smooth it. And a verified owner two years in reports the opposite experience: “Great product, still filtering after 2 years.”
The other calibration is what normal looks like. Tanks do eventually split — that is how these end. A Pentair owner reports their previous fibreglass housing cracking after ten years in direct California sun; a Waterway buyer replaced a Clearwater DE filter that had split at the lower shell, also after ten years. Ten years is service life. Two to three is not, and that is the whole distance between a worn-out filter and a bad one.

Amazon carries the identical model — same brand, same part number — under two live listings at once: about $1,280 at 4.4★ across 34 and about $1,020 at 3.3★ across 20. The cheap quads — and the part of a filter nobody checks
You can buy a four-element 425 sq ft cartridge filter for about $700. Two of them are real products from real brands, not white-label listings using someone else’s part number, and both are in stock as we write this. We looked hard at both, because a $600 saving on identical filter area is exactly the kind of thing this site exists to find.
XtremepowerUS 425 — the tank top is the problem
The listing shows 4.0★ across 176 ratings, which looks like the deepest evidence base of any cheap quad in the category. It is not what it appears to be. That number is pooled across three sizes — a 175 sq ft unit at about $320, a 200 at about $333, and this 425 — so it describes a product line, not this filter. The price has the same problem: the $630 you will often see is a promotional figure against a $700 list.
The critical reviews are where it ends. There are 26 of them, and every one we could read is tagged to this exact 425 size. They describe a single failure:
“The weak point is the filter manifold. It is thin cheap plastic that can’t withstand 20 psi filter pressure.”
“The top blew apart after 1 year of service.”
“I have purchased two in a year. Both had the tops crack.”

That is not a durability complaint. A pool filter is a pressure vessel, and these owners are describing the top of it separating from the bottom while it is running — emptying the pool into the yard, with someone occasionally standing next to it. Several add that the manufacturer would not stand behind the unit, and that the third-party extended warranty they bought instead could not find anyone to service it.
XtremepowerUS 425 sq ft 4-Element Cartridge Filter
The one to skipYour pick if nobody we can identify. It is the cheapest way to get 425 sq ft and four cartridges, and its owner record is a queue of people describing the top of a pressurised tank separating from the bottom.

Rx Clear 425 — a real brand, an honest price, a rough record
Rx Clear is worth clearing up, because it is easy to get wrong in both directions. Amazon carries listings titled “Quad Cartridge Filter for Rx Clear” that are not Rx Clear products — the byline is a different company and they carry no ratings at all. That preposition is the tell, and those are not what we are talking about. Rx Clear also sells under its own store, and that product is genuine: four cartridges, 425 sq ft, Reemay media, an HD-4 resin tank, 2-inch ports, 4.2★ across 31 ratings with no variants pooled in.
The record behind it is thinner than the score suggests. Five of those 31 reviews are critical, and unlike most complaint tails in this category they are not about cleaning frequency. The leading one is the complaint you cannot design around:
“Doesn’t filter at all. The Dp doesn’t go up even when cartridges are clogged.”
“Horrible filtration. This product came defective. And the manufacturer is not helping.”
A pressure differential that never rises while the cartridges load up is the signature of water finding a way past the elements instead of through them. Two more owners received the filter with union o-rings missing or the wrong size. We will link it, because it is a legitimate product at a legitimate price and some readers will want it anyway. We will not crown it.
Rx Clear 425 sq ft Quad Cartridge Filter
The cheapest real quadYour pick if you are replacing a filter on a budget that will not stretch to a major, you accept a thinner and rougher owner record, and you would rather have four cartridges at $700 than one cartridge at the same money.

The tank is the part nobody checks, and it fails on expensive filters too
It would be easy to read the table above as cheap-brands-are-bad. That is not what it says, and the honest version is more useful.
Every cartridge filter tank can crack. The Pentair Clean & Clear Plus 320 — our best online buy, at 2.9%, the second-lowest complaint rate in the roundup — has an owner reporting “2 hairline cracks inside at the base causing a slow leak” after eighteen months. The majors are not immune. They are simply five to eight times less likely, and that is the whole finding: 2.7% and 2.9% at the top of the table against 15% to 23% everywhere below it.
There is a primary document behind why this is the component to care about. In January 2004 the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled 8,500 pool filters — Sta-Rite System 2 and AquaTools units — for this hazard, in its own words:
“The Posi-Lok™ locking ring, which secures the filter’s upper tank shell to the lower tank shell, can disengage from the lower tank shell, allowing the top shell of the filter to blow off, causing injury to nearby consumers.”
CPSC recorded three reports of the upper tank shell blowing off, two with injuries to people servicing the filter. The notice is recall number 04072, dated 28 January 2004, and it is still published on cpsc.gov.
To be exact about what that does and does not mean: that recall is twenty-two years old, it was limited to specific serial numbers, and no filter in this roundup has ever been recalled — we checked the full CPSC database, all 9,966 records, in August 2026. Hayward’s and Pentair’s recalls are all pool heaters and drain covers. Waterway’s three are drain and suction covers. Jandy, Rx Clear and XtremepowerUS have none at all.
What the record establishes is the hazard class. The tank shells and whatever closes them are containing thirty-odd psi, and a regulator has already had to act on exactly that. Every other page ranking these filters compares square footage, micron ratings and lid design. None of them reads the complaint tails, and the complaint tails are where the tank is.
⚠️ One correction to our own framing, from reading the single-element filters next. We first wrote this section as being about the band clamp, because that is the part the 2004 recall named and the part cheap filters visibly skimp on. It is broader than that. A well-regarded Hayward single-element filter has no band clamp at all — its own listing sells a “single-knob design that securely fastens filter head to tank without clamps or bolts” — and an owner describes its threads stripping and the top leaving the tank hard enough to send him to urgent care. The band clamp was simply where we first saw it. The hazard is the pressure vessel and whatever interface closes it, and it is managed by a two-minute habit rather than by a brand choice: why your filter is a pressure vessel, and the procedure that prevents this.
Sizing up: the 425s and the 525
Here the roundup gets less tidy, and we would rather say so than stage a fight the evidence does not support.
At 325 sq ft there are three, not two. Waterway’s Crystal Water 325 sits under the Pentair by $474 and under the Hayward by $634, at about $965, with the same four-cartridge build. It carries the weakest record of the three — 3.8★ across 31, and nearly a quarter of those reviews are critical, mostly describing leaks at the lid, the band clamp and the release valve. It is a real option and we have carded it; it is not the one we would buy.
At 425 sq ft the field is wider than any rival page shows: five four-element filters, from the Hayward at $1,819 down to the XtremepowerUS at about $700. How to size one
Bigger is better here, which is the reverse of how pumps work. An oversized pump pushes water through the media too fast and makes filtration worse. What owners actually complain about
There are two complaint populations on these filters and they say completely different things, which is why reading only one of them is how a page gets this category wrong.
From the satisfied majority, the theme is cleaning frequency — people expected to touch these less than they do. One verified buyer of the Pentair 420 put it plainly: “it is not picking up enough before I have to clean the filters.” Others arrived from DE filters and are delighted precisely because there is no backwashing and no grid maintenance. Does buying a pool filter online really void the warranty?
It depends entirely on the brand, and they do not agree with each other. Hayward runs two catalogues: 'Open Line' SKUs carry a W3 prefix and are approved for online sale at one year, parts only, with no labor coverage, while the dealer-only line is published at three years parts plus a year of field labor. Pentair works the other way — its base limited warranty is sixty days, and the EC-prefixed eCommerce SKU is the one that gets you a full year, so online the EC version is the better buy even though it sometimes costs more. Jandy is the strict one: its warranty does not apply to products purchased through the internet at all, with no equivalent online SKU. In every case a second condition applies on top — the seller must be authorized — and on Amazon every filter we checked was sold by a third party rather than by Amazon or the brand.
