How the Showdown Score works
How to read a Showdown Score™

The only score that counts how often a product breaks, not just how owners feel about it.

  • Three parts add up to the score: what owners rate it, how often it fails them, and whether a credentialed tester backed it.
  • Bands: Exceptional 8.5 and up, Excellent 7.5, Very good 6.5, Good 5.5, Fair 4, Poor below 4. Every score is dated.
  • Price, the warranty and what a link pays us stay out of it.
How the Showdown Score works →

A gas and charcoal combo promises two grills for the price of one and a half. What the listing leaves out is what you own in year two, because the same grill can carry two different warranties.

We did not test these grills. We read every maker’s manual we could get, every Amazon listing signed in, and the one outlet we found that has cooked on a current roster and printed numbers. Five combos, one winner, one SKIP.

The short version:

🏆 Best overall: Oklahoma Joe’s Canyon Combo ($629.98). The one with a published offset cook: about 250 to 275°F for six hours. The catch: 2 years on every part, paint and rust excluded, and 185 lb to move. If you won’t run the offset, the Char-Griller beats it on owners, price and most of the warranty.

💰 Best value: Char-Griller Dual-Function E5030 ($378.99). The deepest owner base here. The catch: the gas body carries 1 year, and it is a grill first, not a smoker.

🔥 Budget offset: Royal Gourmet ZH3005Y ($337.55). An offset firebox at this price, and 333 sq in per fuel, printed. The catch: 1 year on the body, and owners call it flimsy.

🏠 Small patio: Charbroil Bistro Pro ($249.00). Gas and a charcoal rack in one 240 sq in chamber. The catch: it is a gas grill that can burn a little charcoal, not two grills.

🚫 SKIP: Royal Gourmet ZH3002N ($372.93). One or two stars from 22% of its ratings, the worst of the deep bases here.

Three machines sold under one word

“Combo” covers three different grills, and the first question is which one you want.

  • Two chambers side by side. A gas grill and a charcoal grill on one cart. The Char-Griller E5030 and the Royal Gourmet ZH3002N.
  • Two chambers plus an offset firebox. The same, with a side box that smokes. The Canyon Combo and the Royal Gourmet ZH3005Y.
  • One chamber. A gas grill with a charcoal rack inside. The Charbroil Bistro Pro.

The warranty by fuel side

This is the table we could not find anywhere else: what each maker promises on each side, next to how many owners wrote about that side. The terms come from each maker’s manual or warranty page, read in October 2026. The counts come from Amazon’s written reviews at one to three stars, read October 31, 2026. One review can count in more than one column.

Royal Gourmet ZH3002N1 year, 5 on stainless burners that rust through. 2 reviews1 year. 3 reviewsExcluded. 4 reviews1 year30 of 33Brand page; no model manual found

Three things sit under those numbers.

The headline is not the schedule. Char-Griller’s site sells a “5-year burn and rust-through warranty.” Its manual gives the dual-fuel gas body’s bottom half 1 year: “Ash Pan AND Defective Parts AND Gas Grill Body (BOTTOM half) AND Side Burner 1 year from date of purchase.” On that grill, the body under the gas burners has the shortest term of any major part.

Paint and rust are mostly yours. Oklahoma Joe’s and Charbroil both print “Paint is not warranted and will require touch up” and “RUST is not considered a manufacturing or materials defect.” Royal Gourmet says its warranty “does not cover the paint finish as it may burn off during normal use.” Char-Griller covers rust through but excludes paint and surface rust. Char-Griller and Oklahoma Joe’s send parts, not a technician.

Where you buy can matter. Oklahoma Joe’s and Charbroil limit coverage to units “purchased from an authorized retailer,” and both want a dated receipt. Char-Griller requires registration to claim.

What owners actually report

We read 147 of the 153 written reviews at one to three stars across these five listings, which is the group Amazon labels critical. Amazon’s keyword filter shows none of the six we could not reach mentions gas, burners, charcoal, rust or paint. Two things to hold in mind: these are written reviews, not grills sold, so none of this is a failure rate. And the low-star reviews on the Canyon, ZH3005Y and Bistro Pro only start in early 2025, so those grills have barely reached year two. The E5030’s go back to 2019.

Most name neither side. 86 of the 147 name no fuel side and no paint or rust, and most of those are about shipping, missing parts, assembly or thin metal. So open the box early: Char-Griller excludes “Missing or damaged parts not reported within two (2) months of purchase date.”

The split changes with the grill. On the E5030, 6 name the gas side and 2 the charcoal side: three igniter problems, a broken gas control, a hose fire and one rusted-out gas side. The two offset grills run the other way: 2 and 4 on the Canyon, 6 and 10 on the ZH3005Y, with paint failing on the firebox, smoke leaks and air gaps among them. Those counts are small, so we still will not tell you which side fails first. One Canyon owner on Smoking Meat Forums reports air leaking past the ash tray: “My smoker firebox is very leaky, especially around edges of the ash tray making fire control difficult.”

The short term sits where the worst reports are. A 2022 ZH3002N review says “Bottom of gas side rusted out in a year.” A 2020 review on the E5030’s listing says “The back of the gas side has completely rusted out after just three years,” though a grill bought that long before may be an older version. Both grills give the gas body 1 year. Two reports prove nothing about the odds. They show what the short term is for.

Paint is the complaint the warranty will not touch. On the Canyon, 8 of the 20 reviews we read report paint or rust, more than name either fuel side. One owner says “the paint blistered and peeled off of the majority of the smoker box” within a month, and that customer service refused a replacement. On the ZH3005Y it is 11 of 53, and one owner says sheets of paint peeled off the lid onto the food. Every maker here excludes paint.

Best overall: Oklahoma Joe’s Canyon Combo

If you want a real offset smoker and a gas grill on one cart, this is the one.

Smoked BBQ Source’s Jeff Rice ran the firebox through a six-hour beef rib cook and wrote that “it held around 250 to 275 °F,” after adjusting his wood load. Gas reached cooking temperature in “about 6 or 7 minutes,” and charcoal climbed to “around 500 °F.” It has 750 sq in of primary space, a 281 sq in firebox grate and three burners.

Not for you if: you want to set it and walk away. Rice’s own list warns it “Takes time to run the offset properly,” and the manual caps lit charcoal at 1.5 pounds at a time. The warranty is a flat 2 years with paint and rust excluded, and paint or rust is the most common specific complaint in its low-star reviews. It weighs 185 lb, so have help. We could read neither Home Depot’s nor Lowe’s reviews of it.

Pro review “After fixing my wood load, it held around 250 to 275 °F for a six-hour beef rib cook, and the ribs came out juicy with a nice ring.”— Jeff Rice, Smoked BBQ Source
Pros
  • The one combo here with a published offset cook: Smoked BBQ Source held about 250 to 275°F for six hours
  • Three gas burners and a 750 sq in primary area
  • The maker prints one warranty term for every part, so neither fuel side is the short one
  • Sold and shipped by Amazon, and direct from Oklahoma Joe's
Cons
  • A flat 2 years is shorter than Char-Griller's 5 on the parts that burn through, and paint and rust are excluded
  • Paint or rust is the most common specific complaint: 8 of the 20 one-to-three-star reviews we read
  • The manual sets a low cap on lit charcoal, so long smokes need steady refuelling
  • An owner reports air leaks at the ash tray, and Smoked BBQ Source needed a lighter fuel load to hold temperature
  • No side burner, and 2 of those 20 reviews report a dead igniter or starter

Best value: Char-Griller Dual-Function E5030

If you want gas on weeknights and charcoal on weekends, and you do not need a smoker, buy this.

It has the deepest owner base we could count, and the histogram puts only 6% of its ratings at one or two stars. Smoked BBQ Source cooked on it and read 250 to 290°F on the charcoal side with both vents open. It is honest about what it is: the reviewer calls it “primarily a dual-fuel grill.”

Not for you if: you read 870 sq in and pictured one big grill. That is both chambers plus the racks; each main grate is 303. The gas body carries 1 year, and more of its low-star reviews name the gas side than the charcoal side. Nine of the 10 newest reviews behind its Walmart rating came from Char-Griller, so we do not count that rating.

  • 5 years rust or burn through on the charcoal side, the gas hood and the main burner tubes
  • Side burner, and two separate chambers
Cons
  • The gas body's bottom half carries 1 year, against 5 on the charcoal body

This is the cheapest way into an offset firebox we would consider, and the only listing here that prints the split: 333 sq in gas, 333 sq in charcoal.

Not for you if: you plan on keeping it for years. The body carries 1 year, 13% of its ratings sit at one or two stars, and 55 of its written reviews sit at one to three. Paint is the complaint to expect: 11 of the 53 we read report paint, finish or rust failing. No credentialed outlet has tested it, and we could not find its manual, so the warranty above is the brand’s general page.

The rules the listing leaves out

  • Charcoal in a gas chamber: Oklahoma Joe’s says no. The Bistro Pro is the only grill here built for it.
  • Lit charcoal: the Canyon’s manual allows no more than 1.5 pounds at a time.
  • Clearance: Char-Griller says 36 inches from combustibles. Oklahoma Joe’s says 36 inches, and 10 feet from anything that can catch fire. Charbroil says 3 feet from any wall and 10 feet from objects that can catch fire. Print your own manual’s figure; do not average them.
  • Ash: Char-Griller says to soak spent coals in a metal container and wait 24 hours before disposal.

The ones we held back

  • Char-Griller Texas Trio: a triple-function Char-Griller with an offset firebox, but 22 Amazon ratings of its own, a quarter of them at one or two stars. Walmart shows more, and we could not read them.
  • Oklahoma Joe’s Canyon Combo DLX: 63 ratings and 30 written reviews, a thinner base than the standard Canyon’s.
  • Sophia & William: 21% of ratings at one or two stars.
  • Char-Griller Flex Fuel Plus, and new listings from Captiva Designs and others: under our owner-rating floor. We will re-read them as ratings come in.
  • Pit Boss Memphis Ultimate: Pit Boss’s store shows its accessories and no grill, so we did not carry it.

What we could not read: Home Depot and Lowe’s refused our browser, so no rating or review from either store is counted here.

FAQ

What is the best gas and charcoal combo grill in 2026?

The Oklahoma Joe's Canyon Combo. Smoked BBQ Source held its offset firebox at about 250 to 275°F through a six-hour beef rib cook, and it has 4.4★ across 147 Amazon ratings. Its catch is a flat 2-year warranty that excludes paint and rust. If you do not need a real smoker, the Char-Griller E5030 costs far less.

Which side of a combo grill has the shorter warranty?

It depends on the maker. Char-Griller gives the charcoal body, gas hood and main burner tubes 5 years for rust or burn through, and the gas body's bottom half 1 year. Oklahoma Joe's gives every part 2 years, so neither side is short. Royal Gourmet's brand page gives 1 year, plus 5 on stainless burners that rust through. Read the part schedule, not the headline number.

Which side of a combo grill gets the most complaints?

It depends on the grill, and most complaints name neither side. Of 147 one-to-three-star Amazon reviews we read, 86 named no fuel side and no paint or rust. On the Char-Griller E5030, 6 named the gas side and 2 the charcoal side. On the Oklahoma Joe's Canyon Combo it was 2 and 4. Those are counts of written reviews, not failure rates.

Does a combo grill warranty cover paint and rust?

Paint, no: none of the four makers here covers it. Oklahoma Joe's and Charbroil print 'Paint is not warranted and will require touch up' and 'RUST is not considered a manufacturing or materials defect.' Royal Gourmet says the warranty 'does not cover the paint finish as it may burn off during normal use.' Char-Griller excludes paint and surface rust, and covers rust through for the terms in its schedule.

Is a combo grill better than buying two grills?

A combo saves space, but one failure can take both grills out of service. AmazingRibs says it is skeptical of these cookers and recommends separate grills, because if one dies 'they aren't joined at the hip.' That is an opinion from a desk review, not a test. Check the area too: the Char-Griller E5030's 870 sq in is 303 per chamber on the main grate.

Can you burn charcoal on the gas side of a combo grill?

Not on a two-chamber grill. Oklahoma Joe's manual says 'Do not use charcoal or ceramic briquets in a gas grill.' The Charbroil Bistro Pro is the exception, with a charcoal rack in its one chamber, though its own manual prints that same sentence. Follow its charcoal mode steps: 2 lb maximum, and gas burners off after 15 minutes.

Is the Charbroil Bistro Pro gas grill part of the recall?

Not this model. CPSC recall 26773 (September 17, 2026) covers Charbroil's Bistro Pro electric grills with date codes 2510 to 2512. The gas and charcoal model here, 25302161, is not on its model list. Check the model number on your own grill's label.

Do combo grills smoke well?

They can, and it takes practice. Smoked BBQ Source held the Canyon Combo's offset at 250 to 275°F for six hours after adjusting its wood load, and warns it takes time to run the offset properly. It read 250 to 290°F smoking ribs on the Char-Griller 5030's charcoal side, but says that grill is primarily a dual-fuel grill.

Are these grills safe?

None of the five has an active CPSC recall (checked October 31, 2026). The clearances differ by document. Char-Griller's manual says 36 inches from combustibles, and Oklahoma Joe's says 36 inches and also 10 feet from objects that can catch fire. Follow your own grill's manual, and keep any grill out of garages and from under overhangs.
