FAQ

How does a pool builder get on this list?

By meeting four rules, checked by us and never paid for: the company builds new residential pools; it holds a Florida pool contractor license (CPC or RP) that the state's DBPR license search shows as Current, Active; it lists a business address, on its own website or its DBPR license record, that the county property appraiser records as a business property, not a home; and that office is within 100 miles of downtown Tampa. We re-check the license and the address at least every six months.

Can a builder pay to be listed or to be shown first?

No. No builder pays us anything, and none can buy a place on the list or a higher spot. Builders are listed alphabetically within each region. If you enter a ZIP code, the list is sorted by straight-line distance to each builder's nearest office, and by nothing else.

Why are there no star ratings?

Every rating we found for these builders was either the builder's own claim or a copy of a Google score that we could not date or re-check. We only publish ratings we can name, date and pull again, so this page shows none. Read a builder's Google and BBB reviews yourself, and ask for the addresses of three pools it finished in the last year.

How do I check a Florida pool contractor's license myself?

Search the license number at myfloridalicense.com (DBPR's "Verify a License" search) and look for "Current, Active". A CPC (Certified Pool/Spa Contractor) license is good anywhere in Florida. An RP (Registered Pool/Spa Contractor) license only covers the local areas where that contractor holds a local certificate of competency. Every license on this page links to its DBPR record.

My builder is not on this list. Does that mean something is wrong?

No. Some good builders are held off because we could not confirm one rule: the only address they publish is a home, their license did not come up under the company name, or their website could not be read. If you are a builder, or you know one we missed, email thebackyardshowdown@gmail.com with the license number and office address and we will check it.
