How the Showdown Score works
How to read a Showdown Score™

The only score that counts how often a product breaks, not just how owners feel about it.

  • Three parts add up to the score: what owners rate it, how often it fails them, and whether a credentialed tester backed it.
  • Bands: Exceptional 8.5 and up, Excellent 7.5, Very good 6.5, Good 5.5, Fair 4, Poor below 4. Every score is dated.
  • Price, the warranty and what a link pays us stay out of it.
How the Showdown Score works →

The word on the box is lifetime. The word in the warranty is hurricanes.

We read the fine print behind the permanent outdoor lights people are comparing right now, the kits you stick up yourself and the track systems a dealer installs. Then we read the owner reviews, starting with the bad ones. Two things came out of it. Some of the biggest rating counts on these listings belong to other products. And the story owners tell most is a set that stops working inside about a year. Where they name the part, it is most often a power supply or controller, and if an installer hung the lights a second bill follows, which no warranty we read pays for past its first year.

We did not test these lights. What follows is paperwork, listings and owner reports, labelled as such. Nobody we found has run a current kit for more than about a year.

The short version:

🏆 Best overall — Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2: the deepest real owner record here, 4.4★ across 3,154 ratings, three years on Govee’s homepage, and an adapter rated to live outside, about $280 for 100 ft.

Not for you if: your roofline is long or broken up. It cannot be cut and stops at 150 ft. Its critical reviews also report failures at a year or two, and the labor to swap a set is yours.

Weather pick — Govee Prism: the strongest ratings on the page, IP68, IP67 and an outdoor-use adapter, about $860 for 200 ft. Cut-to-fit pick — Govee Pro: cuttable and WIRED’s Best Overall, about $440, with an indoor-only adapter.

Long-run pick — eufy E22: a 150 ft kit, about $280 on sale, on a 24-month warranty written for eufy’s own store. Longest test — eufy S4: most of a year on a WIRED reviewer’s house, about $500 on sale for 200 ft. Budget pick — ASAHOM S107B: about $160, the cleanest star split here, and a warranty page you should read twice.

SKIP — the GOADROM 100 ft: 7,657 ratings on the listing, and only two written reviews of this format, both two stars. The top reviews on the listing describe indoor LED strips.

Billed Catchweight — compared by what you are really buying, not by price. Ratings, prices and sellers read on 30 October 2026.

Prices move constantly — any Amazon price shown is as of the date noted and subject to change; tap through for today's number.

How to read the ratings. Each Govee, eufy and ASAHOM rating is shared by that kit’s lengths, which is normal: one design, sold long or short. The GOADROM card shows only the two reviews of this format, and the next section explains why.

The biggest rating counts are not for these lights

Search Amazon for permanent outdoor lights and the deepest rating counts sit on cheap, unknown brands. We opened them before ranking anything, because a search card is not a rating base.

ListingRatings shownWritten reviews of this formatWhat those reviews say
GOADROM 100 ft7,6572, both two stars“Looks like all of the other reviews are for another product”
Sxlofty 200 ft5,8799, six of them one star“There seems to be reviews for a mix of products here”
Jeryyen 150 ft2,5985, all October 2026Two at one star, on the app and Alexa

The dated reviews tell the story. The GOADROM listing’s top reviews are from 2019 to 2021, headed “LED strip is great!”, and they describe strips in a child’s bedroom. The product now on that page is a roofline light, and its newest two reviews are the only ones about it. Between those two and the rest sits a gap back to March 2025.

Our read: the stars came with the listing and not with the lights. We cannot see how that happened, and Amazon’s own best-seller list is the useful check. Of the listings we opened, only the Govee Lights 2 and Pro ranked in the top 25 of Outdoor String Lights the day we read them, while GOADROM ranked #1,461 despite more ratings than either.

How to check any listing yourself. Open the reviews, filter to this format, and sort by most recent. If the number collapses, or the reviews mention bedrooms and desks, ignore the stars.

“Lifetime” stops at the hurricane

Dealers sell the idea of never thinking about your lights again. Here is what their documents say, beside the kits’.

MakerWhat the term isStorms and weatherLaborWhen you sell the house
Gemstone (dealer)Lifetime on track and deck lights, “as defined by the manufacturer”: 50,000 hours. 5 years on patio and flood lights. 10 years on system parts. Register within 30 days of installationVoid: “power surges, lightning, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis and other weather related incidents”“will not be held responsible for any and all labor”Once, within 90 days, “up to a maximum of two (2) years”
Trimlight (dealer)“50,000 hours of total use”Excludes “hurricane, tornado, windstorm”“INSTALLATION AND LABOR ARE NOT WARRANTED”“not transferable to third parties”
Oelo (dealer or DIY)7 years dealer-installed, 5 DIYExcludes “strong storms (hurricanes) or winds over the maximum wind speed of 70 mph” and “corrosive environment installations”First year only, then “Labor is not included”Once; after year one it drops to two years
JellyFish (dealer)Parts 5 years on one maker page, 3 on another; labor 1 yearWe found no warranty document1 yearNot found
Haven (dealer or DIY)1 year, outside its landscape line“SIGNIFICANT PRODUCT EXPOSURE TO CHEMICALS, HARSH CLEANERS, SALT WATER OR SALT AIR WILL VOID ANY AND ALL WARRANTIES ON EXTERIOR FINISHES.”Not stated in what we read“NOT TRANSFERABLE”
Govee (kit)3 years on its homepage; 12 months on policy pages that do not name permanent lightsNot covered: “use in extreme environments”, “water damage”“you shall bear the costs of product installation and disassembly”Not addressed
eufy (kit)E22 24 months; S4 not on the chartNot covered: “Weather-related exterior degradation”, “Acts of nature”, “water exposure”Not addressedNot addressed
ASAHOM (kit)36 monthsNot covered: “Water exposure • Extreme temps”See belowPage says it transfers

Four things stand out.

Lifetime is a number. At seven hours a night, 50,000 hours is about 20 years, which is Gemstone’s figure and our arithmetic agrees. Run dusk to dawn, about 12 hours, and it is about 11.4 years. Gemstone says hours of use do not affect its warranty. Trimlight’s period is the hours.

The hurricane clause is on the part of the page that voids the warranty. Gemstone’s sits under “What May Void the Warranty”. That is not unusual for a warranty, and we do not fault it: no maker insures your roof. It only means that the storm is your insurer’s problem, and the hurricane deductible on a Florida policy is usually a percentage of the dwelling limit, so lights alone may never reach it.

A lifetime warranty shrinks when you sell. Gemstone’s becomes two years at most for the next owner, and only if they contact Gemstone within 90 days. It also has to be registered within 30 days of installation: “This warranty is otherwise not valid.” Trimlight’s does not transfer. If “it adds value to the house” is part of the pitch, ask for that sentence in writing.

You cannot fix a dealer system yourself. Gemstone voids its warranty on “Installation, modification or repair of any product or part by the end user”, and filing a claim with your installer first is a condition of the warranty. Ask what a service call costs after the labor term ends.

The kit warranty that takes itself back

ASAHOM’s warranty page is the best in the field on first read. Three years on lights and on “all components, including but not limited to power supplies, controllers”, the parts owners say fail. Then: “No matter whether you purchase our ASAHOM products through our official website, Amazon, Walmart, TikTok or other channels, you will enjoy the same warranty.”

Its claims document, updated 4 June 2026, has a table of who handles what. The row for Amazon and Walmart reads “After-sale support only”.

The FAQ on the warranty page is stranger. It says “The warranty excludes any Gemstone Lights products used outside their intended purpose.” Gemstone is a different company. The same FAQ promises a one-year labor warranty, “unless your dealer offers additional coverage”, on a kit with no dealer, and mentions tracks on a kit with no track. We would not count on that labor line. One owner says the company replaced a storm-damaged part “within days”, so practice can beat the paper. Email support before you buy and keep the answer.

What actually fails

We read the newest critical reviews on sixteen listings, up to ten each, 149 in all. The story that repeats most: it worked, then it stopped inside about a year. It is not on every listing. The Enbrighten and Govee 2 Pro reviews do not tell it, and Nanoleaf’s lead with app and connection trouble. Where owners name the part, it is most often a power supply or controller, and for owners who hired an installer the fix meant paying someone to climb back up.

One Govee Pro owner put it best: “purchased November 2025..spent an additional $1200 to have them installed…by March of 2026 they didn’t work. Govee did their job and replaced them but guess what? Now we are looking at another $800 (if we’re lucky) for someone to come out and replace them.”

A Lumary owner: “After just over a year both of my control boxes went out with in 2 weeks of eachother.” An ASAHOM owner: “Power supply went bad less than a year in use”, and $54 for a new one. A eufy E22 owner: “Almost exactly 1 year later one of the strips went out from what looks to be moisture damage.”

Critical reviews overstate a problem by their nature, and we have no failure rate for any brand. The useful point is what to budget. The cheap part of a dead light is the part. The expensive part is the ladder. So:

  • If someone else is installing, add a return visit to the budget and ask the price before you hire them.
  • Mount the control box and adapter where you can reach them from the ground. Those are the parts owners name most.
  • Buy a spare power supply if the maker sells one. Replacement stock can end: one owner reports eufy no longer supports the adapter for a 2023 set, and Prism owners report Govee would not sell them connectors.
  • Keep your receipt and the order number, and note who sold it. See the next point.

Where you buy it changes what you own. Eufy’s chart “applies exclusively to purchases made directly through online shops operated by eufy”, and one S4 owner reports being told “it wasnt sold by an authorized seller no warranty” on an Amazon purchase. Lumary’s policy “applies only to products you purchase on” its own site. Govee’s After-sales Service Policy excludes “Products not purchased directly from Govee”, while its returns page covers authorized retailers, and owners do report Amazon purchases being replaced. Costco prints a 12-month warranty on Govee’s Elite line, against Govee’s three years.

What it costs, kit or dealer

A dealer quote is local, so use these as the makers’ own ranges: Trimlight prints $18 to $35 a foot installed, and JellyFish $25 to $35. Gemstone publishes no price. The kits we recommend run from about $1.60 to about $4.40 a foot at this read, before you pay anyone to hang it.

The gap is real, and it buys something: aluminum track instead of pucks on clips, a person to call, and a term that outlasts a kit’s. It does not buy storm cover, and after the labor term it does not buy the ladder.

Here is the arithmetic that surprised us. Divide price by written years and a 100 ft Govee Lights 2, at $2.80 a foot and three years, costs about 93 cents a foot per covered year. Trimlight at $18 to $35 a foot, over the 19.6 years that 50,000 hours lasts at seven hours a night, comes to about 92 cents to $1.79. Coverage is not life, and a kit’s installer is extra. But on paper, per year, the fancy system and the kit land in the same place, and it is not obvious from either sales page.

Florida and the coast

Use screws. Bob Vila’s Florida tester, on the older Lumary 2: “While the 3M strips held well overall, a few lights started to detach after a day in the Florida heat, so we used a few drops of gel super glue for added hold.” Adhesive was fine for WIRED in the Midwest for most of six months. A hot wall is a different job.

Check the heat rating. Most kits print a ceiling of 140°F, and ASAHOM’s S107B prints 113°F. Those are operating ratings, not measurements, and we found no one who has measured a Florida fascia. But 113°F is a number a sunny Florida wall can plausibly pass.

Put the power somewhere it can live. Govee’s Lights 2 and Prism listings say to install “only to a covered Class A GFCI receptacle with a weatherproof enclosure”. The Pro’s adapter is indoor use only. If your only outlet is on a lanai wall in the rain, that decides between kits before anything else does.

Salt is the unknown. Haven is the only maker we read that names salt air, and Oelo’s “corrosive environment installations” comes closest after it. No kit maker says anything about it. We found no owner or test report on salt, and we could not search every forum, so read that as a gap in the evidence, not as good news.

Under a screen cage, we found no engineering source on fastening lights to aluminum framing. Ask your cage installer before you drill it.

HOA. Florida law bars a fine for leaving lights up past your documents’ limit unless they stay up more than a week after written notice (s. 720.305(7)(b)). That covers how long they stay up. It says nothing about installing them, and your architectural rules still apply.

Best overall: Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2

Why it takes the top spot. It has the deepest real base here, 4.4★ across 3,154 ratings, with 570 written reviews on the white 100 ft alone, and a lower one-star share than the Pro. Its control box and adapter are both rated IP65, so nothing has to come indoors. It is about $280 for 100 ft from Govee’s own Amazon store.

Why it wins with a lower Showdown Score than the Prism and the ASAHOM. You will see those plates below, and they are higher, because their owners are happier so far. But the Prism’s score rests on about a tenth of this base, and the ASAHOM’s on about a sixth, on younger kits, in a category where owners report failures inside about a year. The score cannot read the warranty page either. We would rather stand on thousands of owners and a three-year line than on a shorter record. This one is close, and the Prism is a fair call if you can pay for it.

Not for you if your roofline needs a cut. “This light strip cannot be cut,” says Govee, and the run ends at 150 ft. Four of its ten newest critical reviews report failure within about two years. One owner in Seattle reports a light that failed badly enough to melt its housing. We found no recall on these lights, but report anything like that to the CPSC.

Pros
  • The deepest real base here, and the lowest one-star share of the two Govee best-sellers
  • Control box and adapter are both IP65, so neither has to live indoors
  • Sold and shipped through Govee's own Amazon store, with Govee's three-year line behind it
  • Sold in 50, 100 and 150 ft sets, so a small house does not pay for a long run
Cons
  • It cannot be cut, and the run stops at 150 ft, so a long or broken roofline needs another kit
  • Four of the ten newest critical reviews report failure within about two years, and one describes a melted housing
  • Two of those ten say the box arrived without the control box
  • The three-year line is on the homepage; the policy pages say 12 months and do not name permanent lights
  • Labor is yours: Govee's policy puts installation and removal on the buyer

Weather pick: Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Prism

The best paperwork for a wet house: IP68 lights, an IP67 box and an adapter Govee rates for outdoor use, with a printed range to 140°F. About $860 for 200 ft, at 4.6★ across 351 ratings.

It has half the lights per foot of the Lights 2, so on a short roofline you will see the gaps. Govee also says to keep the adapter in a dry, cool place, which sits oddly beside the outdoor rating. And a “commercial installation specialist” in its reviews says the tape alone will not hold.

Cut-to-fit pick: Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights Pro

If your house has corners, this is the Govee that bends to it: cut, splice, and run to 200 ft with a driver module past 150. It has warm and cool whites, which matter if you want plain trim lighting most nights. WIRED names it Best Overall. About $440 for 100 ft, at 4.4★ across 2,425 ratings.

The catch is power. The adapter is indoor only, seven of its ten newest critical reviews report failure within about a year, one of them within a day, and three name the adapter, the power box or the power supplies. Owners also report sets that would not join, so match the model number and connector before you add a run.

Long-run pick: eufy Permanent Outdoor Lights E22

A 100 ft set and a 50 ft set in one box, about $280 at this read, a sale against a much higher list price, and 4.3★ across 1,039 ratings.

Read the weather line carefully. The title says “Up to IP67”. The bullets say IP65 for the strings and controller, and IP67 for the adapter alone. Two of its ten newest critical reviews blame rain or moisture, eufy’s policy excludes water exposure, and its 24-month term is written for its own store.

Cons
  • The title says up to IP67; the bullets and eufy's page say IP65 for the strings and controller

Longest test: eufy Permanent Outdoor Lights S4

WIRED’s reviewer has run these on her Washington house “for the better part of a year”, the longest test we found of any kit on this page. WIRED’s GE Cync set has run about a year, but on a balcony rail, and we hold it back below. One house is not a durability result, but it is more than anything else here has. About $500 for 200 ft at this read, a sale against a much higher list price, at 4.3★ across 211 ratings.

Eufy’s warranty chart does not list the S4, so we cannot give you a maker’s term. Amazon’s detail table says 24 months, and that is the listing talking. Of its ten newest critical reviews, four are about software, such as schedules that drop out and flicker after adding a strand, and four report failure. Its parts do not work with the E22.

Pros
  • Most of a year on a WIRED reviewer's Washington house, the longest test we found of any kit here
  • Cuttable, and 72 lights per 100 ft
  • Matter, so it joins Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa

Budget pick: ASAHOM Permanent Outdoor Lights S107B

Set the warranty page aside and the record is good: 4.5★ across 498 ratings, the lowest one-star share of the kits here, cuttable, with warm and cool whites, about $160 for 100 ft.

Then put the warranty page back. The Amazon row in its claims document says after-sale support only. ASAHOM lists this series as TUV SUD where its dearer series are UL listed, and it prints the lowest heat rating here. Six of its ten newest critical reviews report failure within about a year. For a Florida roofline, we would pay more.

Pros

  • Cuttable, with warm and cool white LEDs
  • The maker names power supplies and controllers inside its 3-year parts line
  • One owner reports a storm-damaged part replaced within days
Cons
  • Its warranty page says the same terms apply on Amazon; its claims document lists Amazon as after-sale support only
  • That page's FAQ names another company, Gemstone Lights, in its exclusions
  • The claims document excludes water exposure and extreme temperatures
  • Rated to 113°F, the lowest ceiling here
  • The maker lists this series as TUV SUD, where its other series are UL listed

SKIP: GOADROM Permanent Outdoor Lights 100 ft

Its listing shows more ratings than any kit on this page, and you should ignore them. The two owners who actually reviewed this format gave it two stars: the lights sit about three feet apart, and one says the screws are “useless for mounting” and the tape does not hold. No maker site resolves, and the warranty is a single line on the listing. It is very cheap, and you are buying blind.

“Looks like all of the other reviews are for another product but the lights for the outside of your house are VERY far apart. I have a small house and these light would be like three feet away from each other so not great.”— mara, Amazon · Verified owner
Pros
  • A very low price for a 100 ft set
  • Ships from Amazon, so the return window is Amazon's
Cons
  • The 7,657 ratings on the listing are not for this product: the top reviews behind them date from 2019 to 2021 and describe indoor LED strips
  • Only two written reviews match this format, both two stars
  • One owner: "Looks like all of the other reviews are for another product"

The ones we held back

  • Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro: the newest Govee, with 45 ratings and 13 percent at one star. It sits under our 50-rating floor. A pro installer in its reviews prefers the Prism. We will read it again when it reaches 50.
  • Lumary Permanent Outdoor Lights 3: the rating looks great, but critical reviews on this 2026 listing describe a December 2024 purchase, so the base mixes in an older generation. Its policy is one year on Lumary’s own site. WIRED’s tester skipped the earlier Lumary Max.
  • GE Cync Dynamic Effects Eave Lights: WIRED’s budget pick, about a year on a balcony rail with no issues, and 44 ratings. Under the floor.
  • Enbrighten Eternity: a limited lifetime warranty on the LEDs, and the Amazon listing we read is 24 lights on 100 ft, with an owner measuring 4 ft spacing. That is an accent light.
  • Philips Hue Festavia: needs a Hue Bridge. Nanoleaf: app and connection complaints lead its reviews. Lepro EE1: 14 percent one star.
  • Hampton Bay at Home Depot: the real private-label rival. Home Depot refused our read, so we are not ranking it yet.

The bottom line

Buy the kit if you can reach your own eaves, because the repair owners describe most is a power supply or controller and a ladder. Pay a dealer if you cannot, and ask three questions before you sign: what does a service call cost after the labor term, does the warranty transfer, and what does your document say about storms. Then call your insurer.

Do permanent outdoor light warranties cover hurricanes?

Not in the documents we read. Gemstone's US warranty lists hurricanes under what voids it, Trimlight's excludes hurricane and windstorm, and Oelo's excludes strong storms, hurricanes and winds over 70 mph. Eufy excludes weather-related degradation and acts of nature. Storm damage is a question for your homeowners policy, and check your hurricane deductible, which can be far larger than the lights are worth.

What does a lifetime warranty on permanent lights actually mean?

Usually 50,000 hours, not your lifetime. On its track and deck lights, Gemstone defines it as a tested lifespan of 50,000 hours, about 20 years at seven hours a night, and its patio and flood lights get five years. Gemstone's warranty is not valid unless it is registered within 30 days of installation. Trimlight's warranty period is 50,000 hours of total use. Neither warranty document covers labor, and Gemstone's passes to the next owner for two years at most, while Trimlight's does not transfer at all.

Gemstone or Govee: which should I buy?

Buy a dealer system if you want aluminum track, someone to call and a warranty that outlasts a kit's. Buy a kit if you can reach your eaves yourself. A dealer system costs several times as much a foot. Trimlight prints $18 to $35 a foot installed and JellyFish $25 to $35, and the labor on a repair after the dealer's own term is still yours. Gemstone publishes no price.

How long do permanent outdoor lights really last?

Makers print 50,000 hours, and nobody we found has tested a current kit for more than about a year. We read the newest critical reviews on 16 listings, up to ten each, and the most repeated story is a set that stopped working inside about a year, though not on every listing. Where owners name the part, it is most often a power supply or controller. Treat 50,000 hours as the life of the LED, not of the box that feeds it.

Can permanent lights stay up in Florida?

They can, but read the ratings. A Bob Vila tester in Florida saw lights start to detach after a day of heat on adhesive strips and added glue, so plan on screws. Rated air temperature tops out at 140°F on most kits and 113°F on ASAHOM's. Check where the adapter goes: Govee's Pro adapter is for indoor use only, and Govee's listings call for a covered GFCI outlet in a weatherproof enclosure.

Do Amazon-bought lights get the same warranty as the maker's store?

Often not in writing. Eufy's chart applies to its own online shops, Lumary's to its own site, and ASAHOM's claims document lists Amazon as after-sale support only, though its marketing page says the opposite. Govee's policy excludes products not bought directly, while its returns page covers authorized retailers. Owners report help anyway, sometimes. Keep your receipt and ask before you need it.

Update history
  • 2026-10-31 — Corrected: the labor line now speaks for the warranty documents we read, the GOADROM line says what the top reviews describe, and the rating-count finding is scoped to the listings we read. After a second read: we say we read the newest critical reviews, up to ten a listing, not every one; the failure story now matches those 149 reviews and no longer claims every brand; the eufy S4's longest test is scoped to the kits here, because WIRED has run a GE Cync set on a balcony for about a year; Gemstone's row adds its 30-day registration rule and its five-year patio and flood lights; Haven's salt quote is now whole; the Govee Pro count is seven of ten and the ASAHOM count six of ten; the eufy E22 and S4 complaint lines match what the reviews say; and the best-seller line says top 25, not the top.
  • 2026-10-30 — Published. We searched the field on 30 October 2026: the best-seller and new-release lists for Outdoor String Lights and LED Strip Lights, five buyer phrasings, twelve brands, page two, the review-ranked sort and a $100-600 price band, with Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Costco and Best Buy from page copies. Ratings, prices, sellers and critical reviews read signed in the same day.
