Read the warranty column down, because it inverts the price order. Every pump on this page is bought online — that is the whole premise of the page — and the two pool majors charge you for it.
Pentair rates the SuperFlo VS and the WhisperFlo VST at two years. You do not get two years. Pentair’s own warranty page says it plainly: “Products purchased from the internet, including Authorized Pentair Online Resellers, receive a one-year parts only warranty from the date of purchase.” Labor is never covered on an internet purchase, and e-commerce units are shut out of the three-year bundle. The two-year figure belongs to a pump bought at a store and installed by a paid professional.
Hayward is not a penalty so much as a fork, and the tell is in the model number. Hayward splits its catalogue into Expert Line, “approved for sale only via brick-and-mortar locations”, and Open Line, “approved for sale online”, which “includes W3 Model #s”. Both Haywards we card are W3 SKUs — W3SP2603VSP and W3SP3202VSP — so buying either online is legitimate and voids nothing. What you are buying is the shorter-warranty SKU: Hayward’s own spec table for each prints “Warranty - Parts: 1-year” and “Warranty - Labor: None”, and Hayward says Open Line coverage “does not increase when sold via brick-and-mortar location… or installed by a professional.” There is no upgrade path.
If you see a Hayward pump online without a W3 in the model number, that is the dealer SKU. Hayward’s standing notice since September 2020 is that its warranties “apply only to a product that was purchased from Hayward or a Hayward authorized seller” — so the three-year term you were reading about does not travel with it.
Which leaves the two cheapest brands on the page holding the longest terms. AquaStrong publishes two years, three with registration, with no dealer clause and no installation condition. And the BLACK+DECKER pumps — made by Blue Torrent Pool Products, which is who actually answers the phone — carry a five-year limited warranty in their own instruction manual: “Blue Torrent Pool products warrants this product to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of five (5) years following the date of purchase.” We read that clause on a manual mirror, not on a maker page (Blue Torrent’s own site refused our request), and it comes with the catch that matters: repairs must go through the maker’s Authorized Pump Service Centers, of which the manual names one, in Seaford, New York. A long warranty with one service centre is a different product from a one-year warranty with a dealer in every town, and the 3 HP card below shows what that looks like when it goes wrong. None of this is a reason on its own to pick the cheap pump over the Hayward. It is a reason to stop paying the majors for coverage you were never going to get.

This is a newer crown than the heading suggests, so here is how it happened. From June to September 2026 this belt belonged to the Pentair SuperFlo VS, the most-reviewed variable-speed pump on Amazon. Pentair discontinued it in August. We kept it as the pick with a disclosure while it was easy to buy, and set the trigger on stock. On 4 September its listing read “Only 2 left in stock.” A pump you may not be able to buy next month cannot be the recommendation, so the belt moved to the pump that had been sitting one line below it as the value pick.
It moved on evidence, not by default. Three things changed the BLACK+DECKER’s case since August. Buy it if you want the most pump for the money with a real test and a real warranty term behind it, and you are comfortable that a failure means a phone call and a parts box rather than a truck. Buy the Hayward Super Pump VS if a dealer network is worth $750 to you.

The Pool Nerd’s 2026 roundup names the Super Pump VS Best Overall after installs on “multiple test pools”, with a watt meter reading “around 200 watts” at 1,400 RPM for daily filtration. Swimming Pool Steve put the same SKU on his bench rig — flow meter, external watt meter, 240 V, 1.5-inch pipe — and published the whole sweep, from 14.7 GPM at 30 W to 71.3 GPM at 1,260 W. No other pump on this page has two independent instrumented reads. It is a genuine Hayward Open Line SKU (the W3 prefix), so buying it online is legitimate, and there is a dealer and parts network behind it that the BLACK+DECKER lacks.
Three things to know before you click. Amazon is the expensive way to buy it: The Pool Nerd quotes “around $750–$900” for this pump and Amazon wants $1,749, so a Hayward dealer may beat the price and will certainly beat the warranty tier. It is 230V only — Steve is specific that this W3SP2603VSP “does not run on 120V”, and the 115V and dual-voltage versions are different part numbers. And its critical reviews are about the control board: four of the first ten describe the drive or board failing inside a year — one with “a puff of smoke coming from the control compartment” on first run — and one owner records the warranty catch in plain words: labor is not covered because the pump came from Amazon. The obvious question after the SuperFlo VS is what replaces it? Pentair’s answer is the SuperFlo VST (342002). Amazon’s answer, as of September 2026, is still nothing genuine: a Pentair-brand search returns VST parts and no VST pump, and the only whole-pump listings are marketplace resellers whose title misspells the brand as “Penteir”, whose own spec table reads “Brand: Generic”, and which carry nine ratings at $1,459. We are not sending you there. It is ENERGY STAR certified on the EPA list under its own model number (BDXBTVAR300), it has the same WiFi scheduling and the same five-year maker term, and its 4.2 stars across 150 ratings are its own base, not pooled with the 1.5 HP — eight of eight visible reviews from verified purchasers, no Vine.
Its critical reviews are the reason it is not simply “the winner, bigger”. Sixteen of 150 are critical, and half of the first ten are not about the pump at all: they are owners who could not reach anyone for a warranty claim — calls, re-registrations, voicemails, “Crickets”, or being sent back to the Amazon seller. The defects underneath are ordinary (output collapsing after about a year, a leak at the motor, a bearing knock at six months); the support gap is the finding. Two things to know about its rating before you lean on it. The AQUASTRONG’s 4.5 stars across 233 ratings come from one review pool shared by the 1.5 HP, 2 HP and 3 HP versions — Amazon presents them as “Color” options on the same listing — so the number describes the family, not this pump. And every visible review is dated 2026, so it is a young base. It is a clean one — ten of ten visible reviews are verified purchases with no Vine — but it is not a measurement of one pump the way the Pentair’s 1,834 is.
And a correction to our own card. This card has always been named the 1.5 HP, but until September 2026 it linked the 2 HP listing at $594.14. It now links the 1.5 HP at about $509, which is the pump the name and the specs describe — and the cheapest way into variable speed here by a wide margin. It is self-priming with a built-in filter basket, runs on 115V or 230V, and unlike the inground-only majors it fits above-ground pools too. Its critical reviews (17 of 233, the smallest share on the page) say it does a little less than the label — 3,670 RPM at the top setting against 4,000 advertised, and a manual that says not to run it at maximum for hours — with a handful of early leaks and one owner who never heard back from the brand. It publishes the longest no-strings warranty of the pool brands, two years and three with registration, with no dealer clause. For three months this was our best overall, and on the evidence it earned it: 4.4 stars across 1,834 ratings, ten of ten visible reviews from verified purchasers, the cheapest of the trusted pool brands at about $1,280, three programmable speeds, a 24-hour clock, an override button, and a drop-in fit where a worn-out single-speed used to sit. It is still all of those things. What it is not is available: Pentair’s own page says it “has been discontinued” and points to the SuperFlo VST, and on 4 September 2026 the Amazon listing read “Only 2 left in stock.” We kept the card because the listing was still live and genuine when we checked, and because the warning is more useful with the product than without it. If you can get one, it is a fine pump with the deepest owner record in the category. If the listing reads “Currently unavailable” when you arrive, that is the end of the story — do not buy a “Penteir” in its place.
How to choose: single-speed vs. variable, sizing, and run time
Variable-speed is the whole point — and the savings are real. A single-speed pump runs flat-out whenever it’s on. A variable-speed pump moves the same water at a much lower RPM, and because pump power drops with the cube of speed, halving the speed cuts the power to roughly an eighth. Run it longer at that low speed and you still come out far ahead — the DOE and ENERGY STAR peg the savings at up to ~70%. That’s the number the calculator above is built on.
One thing that can quietly cancel that saving: your automation brand. All three majors run their equipment over a proprietary RS-485 bus, so a pump on a different brand’s controller usually falls back to a Smart Relay that can only switch power on and off — no speed scheduling. A variable-speed pump under relay control is a single-speed pump with extra steps, which is the opposite of why you bought it. That applies to the BLACK+DECKER and the AQUASTRONG on any major’s automation, and to a Hayward pump on a Pentair pad. If you run automation, match the pump to it, and see Pentair vs Jandy vs Hayward for the one cross-brand path that genuinely works.
Size to the pool, not the ego. A bigger motor doesn’t clean better; it just wastes more energy and strains your plumbing. Most residential inground pools are well matched to a 1.5 HP variable-speed pump (the BLACK+DECKER, or the Hayward Super Pump VS at 1.65 total HP). Step up to the Hayward TriStar VS or the 3 HP BLACK+DECKER only for a large pool, long pipe runs, water features, or an in-floor cleaning system. And read the model number, not the horsepower on the box: the 1.5 HP Pentair is really a 2.2 total-HP pump and the 1.65 HP Hayward a 1.65 — Steve’s bench numbers show the difference.
Mind the voltage and the run time. Both Haywards and the Pentair SuperFlo VS are 230V only — almost every pool pad has it, but confirm before you buy. The BLACK+DECKER 1.5 HP, the WhisperFlo VST and the AQUASTRONG take 115V or 230V, which is the quieter reason to consider them if your pad was wired for an old single-speed. For how long to run it, aim for one to two full water turnovers a day. With variable speed you’ll run more hours at low RPM than you did on single-speed, and that’s fine — the low-RPM hours are cheap, which is exactly where the savings live. Many utilities also offer rebates on variable-speed pumps, so check yours before you buy — and check what your utility asks for, because it is usually the ENERGY STAR certification rather than the words ‘variable speed’. We checked the EPA’s own certified-products dataset rather than the listings: both BLACK+DECKERs, both Haywards and the WhisperFlo VST are on it under their own model numbers. The AQUASTRONG is not — the brand’s own site does not claim it. If your utility runs a rebate, that is the line it will be drawn on, and a rebate can close a good part of the gap between the cheapest sticker here and the pumps above it.

How much does it cost to run a pool pump?
A single-speed 1.5 HP pump running 8 hours a day at about $0.17/kWh costs roughly $900–$1,000 a year — often the biggest electricity load in the whole house. A variable-speed pump doing the same job runs closer to $250–$350. Use the calculator above with your own rate and run time to see your number.
Are variable-speed pool pumps worth it?
For almost everyone replacing a single-speed, yes. The DOE and ENERGY STAR put the energy saving at up to ~70%, because pump power drops with the cube of motor speed — running slower for longer moves the same water for a fraction of the power. Most variable-speed pumps pay for themselves in one to two seasons, and many utilities offer rebates on top.
Are variable-speed pool pumps required by law?
Largely, yes. Since the U.S. Department of Energy's pool-pump rule took effect in July 2021, most replacement pumps of 1 HP and up sold in the U.S. are variable-speed, and several states (California, Florida, Arizona) mandate them outright. If you're replacing a dead single-speed, you'll almost certainly be buying variable-speed anyway.
What size (HP) pool pump do I need?
Size to your pool's volume and plumbing, not to 'bigger is better' — an oversized pump just wastes energy. Most residential inground pools are well served by a 1.5 HP variable-speed pump like the BLACK+DECKER 1.5 HP VS. Large pools, long pipe runs, water features, or in-floor cleaning systems want more total HP — the Hayward TriStar VS at 1.85 THP, or the 3 HP BLACK+DECKER for about $1,000 less.
Why did the BLACK+DECKER replace the Pentair SuperFlo VS as best overall?
Because the Pentair is discontinued and nearly gone. Pentair's own page says the SuperFlo VS 'has been discontinued', and on 4 September 2026 its Amazon listing read 'Only 2 left in stock'. We had kept it as the pick with an outgoing-model disclosure while it was easy to buy; a pump you may not be able to buy next month cannot be the recommendation. The BLACK+DECKER 1.5 HP VS was already the value pick, and three things changed its case: a credentialed hands-on test now exists (The Pool Nerd ran it on a 12,000-gallon test pool in July 2026), we read the maker's five-year warranty term from the instruction manual, and its critical reviews turned out to be the smallest share in the field (40 of 411). It is $999.99 against the Pentair's $1,280 for the same 1.5 HP, ENERGY STAR certified on the EPA's own list, and still in production. Its honest catches are on the card: one factory service centre instead of a dealer network, and a long-term record that is still being written.
The Pentair SuperFlo VS is discontinued — should I still buy it if I find one?
If it is in stock, yes: it is still the genuine, most-reviewed variable-speed pump on Amazon (4.4 stars across 1,834 owners) at about $1,280. It is no longer our pick only because you probably cannot get one — the listing read 'Only 2 left' when we checked. What you should not do is buy the marketplace 'SuperFlo VST' listings in its place: the ones we found misspell the brand as 'Penteir', show 'Brand: Generic' in their own spec table, and carry nine ratings at $1,459. If you want to stay with Pentair, the genuine WhisperFlo VST on this page is the one that is actually on Amazon, and a Pentair dealer is the better warranty channel for any of them.
What replaces the Pentair SuperFlo VS?
Pentair's named replacement is the SuperFlo VST (342002), and as of September 2026 there is still no Pentair-branded listing for it on Amazon — only marketplace resellers we would not send you to. How many hours a day should I run my pool pump?
Aim for one to two full turnovers of your water per day. With a single-speed that's about 8 hours at full power; with a variable-speed you run longer at low RPM, and that low-RPM time is exactly where the savings come from.
