Are solar pool heaters worth it?

If you get reliable sun and you're patient, yes — solar has essentially no running cost, so over years it's the cheapest heat there is. The trade-offs are real, though: it only adds heat while the sun is out, it warms gradually rather than on demand, and it does nothing at night or under heavy cloud. Does a screen enclosure affect pool heating?

Significantly. Florida Solar Energy Center testing measured a standard screen enclosure blocking 30–40% of the solar energy reaching the pool on a clear day — so a caged pool loses most of its free solar warming and runs noticeably cooler through fall and spring. Practical upshots: a screened Florida pool usually needs a heater more than an open one, and if you go solar, FSEC's sizing tables call for roughly a third more panel area than an identical unscreened pool. Heat pumps and gas heaters work the same under a cage — they just have a bigger gap to close.
